History
Index-Werke was founded in 1914 by Hermann Hahn, who began manufacturing turret automatic lathes in the same year. During World War I, up to 70 people were employed at Index, although about two-thirds of the employees were drafted into military service. By the outbreak of World War II and the death of Hermann Hahn in 1939, the workforce had grown to around 850 employees. After the end of the war, the company was dismantled in 1945 and its movable inventory was shipped to Great Britain. Following reconstruction, 530 people were again working at Index in 1953, and since then more than 20,000 automatic lathes have been sold. From 1975, production was expanded to include multi-spindle automatic lathes, and shortly thereafter the company entered CNC technology. After the death of Eugen C. Hahn, the son of the company founder born in 1907, 85% of the company shares were transferred into the Eugen und Irmgard Hahn Stiftung, which has supported the company since then. In 1997, the company took over Traub Drehmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG from Reichenbach an der Fils. To this day, the company pursues a two-brand strategy.
