Overview

The Informations-Verarbeitungs-Zentrum (IVZ) is a cooperative IT service unit of Germany's public broadcasting organizations ARD and Deutschlandradio. It is organized as a public-law, non-legal-capacity administrative community (nicht-rechtsfähige Verwaltungsgemeinschaft) and is based at Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb) in Potsdam. The IVZ was founded in 1993 by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg (ORB) and Sender Freies Berlin (SFB). Over the following decades, additional broadcasters joined: Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) in 1997, Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR) in 2000, Deutschlandradio (DRadio) in 2003, Radio Bremen (RB) in 2005, Deutsche Welle (DW) in 2009, Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in 2011, and Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) and Südwestrundfunk (SWR) in 2017. The IVZ's tasks include the collection, processing and use of data, including for the broadcasters' own journalistic and editorial purposes, the establishment of databases, program production and software development, as well as business and archival IT applications for the broadcasters or on behalf of third parties. Its business fields include IT services for media-specific SAP applications, data center services for cross-ARD IT services, and IT services for the archive systems of public broadcasting organizations. The IVZ is governed by a steering committee composed of the heads of information systems/organization of the participating broadcasters, and a board of administration (Verwaltungsrat) with one member per broadcaster, which elects a chairman for two business years. The managing director coordinates with the steering committee on all technical matters.
