Overview

Infosys Limited is an Indian multinational technology company providing information technology services, business consulting, software engineering, outsourcing, and digital transformation solutions. It is headquartered in Bengaluru and is one of India's largest and most internationally recognized IT-services companies. The company serves clients across financial services, insurance, manufacturing, retail, communications, energy, utilities, healthcare, logistics, and the public sector. Infosys was established in 1981 by seven engineers led by N. R. Narayana Murthy. It began with modest capital and initially operated as Infosys Consultants Private Limited in Pune before moving its main base to Bengaluru in 1983. The company first developed custom software and, for a short period, experimented with hardware products including electronic telex equipment and keyboard concentrators. India's economic liberalization in 1991 created more favorable conditions for export-oriented software services, allowing Infosys to build an offshore delivery model serving customers in North America and other overseas markets. The company became publicly traded in India in 1993. Its early public offering was initially undersubscribed, but the shares subsequently performed strongly. Infosys expanded its international capital-market presence in 1999 when it listed American depositary receipts on Nasdaq, becoming the first Indian company to do so. Its global reputation grew alongside India's software-export industry, and the company became associated with transparent governance, professional management, employee training, and a large-scale global delivery network. Infosys has developed both services and intellectual-property businesses. Its principal service activities include application development and maintenance, independent validation, systems integration, cloud transformation, cybersecurity, data and analytics, artificial intelligence, engineering, digital experience, and sustainability consulting. Through Infosys Consulting, it provides strategy and transformation advice. Infosys BPM provides outsourced business-process services in areas such as finance, procurement, customer support, and human resources. The company has also commercialized platforms and software products, including Finacle for banking, Panaya for application delivery and management, Infosys Equinox for digital commerce, Infosys Meridian for workplace collaboration, and Infosys Cortex for customer engagement. Its more recent platform families include Cobalt for cloud services, Topaz for generative artificial intelligence, and Aster for AI-enabled marketing. The business has expanded through subsidiaries, joint ventures, and acquisitions. Progeon, created with Citigroup in 2002, became the foundation for Infosys BPM after Infosys acquired Citigroup's remaining interest. Infosys Consulting was established in 2004, while Infosys Public Services was created in 2009 to serve government clients in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. EdgeVerve Systems was formed in 2014 to house enterprise software and platforms, including Finacle. Infosys also established a large innovation fund in 2015 to invest in early-stage and deep-technology companies, and formed the Singapore-based Infosys Compaz joint venture with Temasek in 2018. Infosys operates a substantial network of sales offices and development centers across the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and other regions. North America and Europe are its most important overseas markets. In fiscal 2023–24, the company reported that approximately 61 percent of revenue came from North America, 25 percent from Europe, 3 percent from India, and the remainder from other regions. As of 31 March 2024, it reported 317,240 employees, with women representing approximately 39.3 percent of the workforce. Employees are commonly referred to as Infoscions. Its Global Education Centre in Mysuru is a major corporate training campus, and the comp…

History

Infosys was incorporated as Infosys Consultants Private Limited in Pune on 2 July 1981 by seven engineers: N. R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, Kris Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal, K. Dinesh, N. S. Raghavan, and Ashok Arora. The founders started with limited capital and moved the company's center of operations to Bengaluru in 1983. Ashok Arora left the company in 1989, selling his stake to the remaining founders. During its first decade, Infosys combined software services with a small number of hardware initiatives, including electronic telex machines and keyboard concentrators. Its main growth engine became offshore custom-software development. The liberalization of India's economy in 1991 improved the environment for technology exports and international investment, enabling Infosys to scale its delivery operations and build a client base outside India. Infosys held its initial public offering in February 1993 at an offer price of ₹95 per share. Although the issue was initially undersubscribed, subsequent trading performance helped establish the company as a leading Indian technology stock. In 1993 it also introduced an employee stock-option scheme. The company developed early software products such as Bancs2000 for banking automation in 1994, Entark middleware in 1995, and the In2000 Y2K toolset in 1996. Some product initiatives, including Yantra and OnMobile-related activities, were later separated or divested. The company reached an important international capital-markets milestone in March 1999 by listing American depositary receipts on Nasdaq. Infosys was the first Indian company to receive a Nasdaq listing. Its ADRs were subsequently transferred to the NYSE Euronext system and later traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Also in 1999, Infosys introduced Finacle, a core-banking suite that succeeded Bancs2000, and created SETLabs as a research and innovation unit. SETLabs later became Infosys Labs and developed the company's intellectual-property and research capabilities. Infosys broadened its operating model in the 2000s. It established Progeon in 2002 as a business-process-management venture with Citigroup, created Infosys Consulting in 2004, and acquired Citigroup's remaining interest in Progeon in 2006. Infosys Public Services was established in 2009 to focus on public-sector work in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. These moves expanded the company beyond application outsourcing into consulting, business processes, and government technology. In 2014, Infosys established EdgeVerve Systems as an enterprise-software subsidiary. Finacle's assets were transferred to EdgeVerve in 2015, consolidating several digital products under a dedicated platform organization. The same year, Infosys announced a US$500 million innovation fund for early-stage and deep-technology investments, including a planned allocation for Indian startups. In 2018, it formed Infosys Compaz with Temasek Holdings, a Singapore-based joint venture intended to serve Southeast Asian markets. Leadership also changed significantly. The company was led by its founders from establishment until 2014, with Narayana Murthy serving as chief executive for the first 21 years. Vishal Sikka became the first chief executive from outside the founding group in 2014, but resigned in 2017. U. B. Pravin Rao served as interim chief executive, after which Salil Parekh became chief executive officer and managing director in January 2018. The company's service portfolio has continued to evolve toward cloud, data, artificial intelligence, engineering, cybersecurity, digital commerce, and industry platforms. Infosys Cobalt represents its cloud ecosystem, while Infosys Topaz is associated with generative-AI services and solutions. Finacle remains a major banking product, and Infosys BPM, Infosys Consulting, EdgeVerve, and Infosys Public Services extend the company's reach into specialized service and software markets. Infosys developed a large international operating footprint, with sales and marketing offices and development centers across major regions. Its Mysuru Global Education Centre, established in 2002, became a signature training facility capable of supporting large cohorts of new employees. The company's workforce exceeded 317,000 people by 31 March 2024. North America remained its largest geographic revenue market, followed by Europe. Alongside its growth, Infosys encountered controversy over US immigration and tax practices and over technical shortcomings in government portals delivered in India. In 2013, it reached a US$34 million civil settlement with US authorities concerning visa allegations without admitting liability. In 2019, it reached a separate settlement with California authorities concerning allegations involving visas and payroll taxes. Indian government portals including MCA21, GSTN, and the Income Tax portal also attracted public and official criticism because of outages, defects, or migration problems. These episodes highlighted the operational and reputational risks associated with large technology projects and public-sector contracts.
