Overview
Innofreight Solutions GmbH is an Austrian freight transport and logistics company headquartered in Bruck an der Mur in the state of Styria. Its core business is the development and rental of superstructures for freight wagons, of freight wagons themselves, and of matching unloading systems. The company's guiding idea is the separation of the load carrier from the carrying vehicle: instead of building a dedicated wagon for each commodity, Innofreight places interchangeable containers and superstructures onto standardized wagon platforms, allowing individual solutions for different industries and companies. According to the company, more than 35 different superstructures can be combined with freight wagons in three different lengths and track gauges. Innofreight was founded in 2002 by Peter Wanek-Pusset and Herbert Wied, growing out of the Innofreight Wanek & Wied OEG established in 2001. It began with solutions in combined transport and, from around 2005, focused on modular freight transport and logistics systems almost exclusively for rail freight. The first products addressed the transport of wood chips, including a bulk container that was subsequently developed into superstructures for agricultural products, building materials, chemical products and dangerous goods, iron ore, liquids, wood and steel products. To make better use of the capacity of these load carriers, the company began developing its own container-carrying wagon in 2012, marketed as the InnoWaggon; its low empty weight allows a higher payload. Innofreight also develops stationary unloading installations for its container systems, such as those used at the pulp mill in Pöls or at Voestalpine in Leoben Donawitz. The company markets itself under the slogan "Moving Limits" and organizes its offering around logistics solutions for steel, energy, building materials, wood, agriculture and liquids. Its product families include the InnoWaggon container-carrying wagons, the WoodTainer and MonTainer bulk containers, and the RockTainer Ore, RockTainer Sand and RockTainer INFRA self-discharging containers. In 2019 it founded the joint venture Innoduler in Slovenia with the Slovenian company duler to produce superstructures; additional superstructures are made by Container d.o.o. in Slovenia and Kerex s.r.o. in Slovakia. In May 2017 Innofreight and VTG announced that they would cooperate in the future. By 2021, Innofreight products were in use in 20 European countries. According to the company's own figures, 17,000 superstructures, 2,020 InnoWaggons, 10 stationary unloading installations and 59 rotating unloading forklifts were in operation. Innofreight has won the Styrian innovation prize Fast Forward Award in 2006, 2013 and 2018. The company remains privately held and continues to expand its modular rail logistics portfolio, including recent developments such as the InnoBogie bogie frame and the Smart GigaWood Round & Sawn timber transport solution.
History
Innofreight Solutions GmbH is a Styrian freight transport and logistics company headquartered in Bruck an der Mur. It was founded in 2002 by Peter Wanek-Pusset and Herbert Wied, developing out of the Innofreight Wanek & Wied OEG established in 2001; on the basis of a contribution agreement of July 2003, the Innofreight Wanek & Wied OEG (FN 225866g) was contributed into Innofreight Consulting & Logistics GmbH. In its early years the company worked on solutions in the field of combined transport, and from around 2005 it turned to the development of modular freight transport and logistics systems, almost exclusively for rail freight. It initially concentrated on solutions for transporting wood chips, such as the development of a bulk container. From this container, further superstructures were developed for the transport of agricultural products, building materials, chemical products and also dangerous goods, iron ore, liquids, wood and steel products. To make better use of the capacity of these load carriers, Innofreight began in 2012 to develop its own container-carrying wagon. Because of the low empty weight of the wagon, marketed as the InnoWaggon, the payload could be increased. In addition, Innofreight develops stationary installations for unloading its container systems, such as those used at the pulp mill in Pöls or at Voestalpine in Leoben Donawitz. In May 2017, Innofreight and VTG announced that they would cooperate in the future. In 2019, together with the Slovenian company duler, the joint venture Innoduler was founded in Slovenia for the production of superstructures. All superstructures from 13 feet up to 40 feet can be produced in Slovenia, where a highly modern welding robot can weld entire superstructures in a single pass. In addition, superstructures are also manufactured by the companies Container d.o.o. (Slovenia) and Kerex s.r.o. (Slovakia). By 2021, Innofreight products were in use in 20 European countries. According to the company's own information, 17,000 superstructures, 2,020 InnoWaggons, 10 stationary unloading installations and 59 rotating unloading forklifts were in operation. Innofreight won the Styrian innovation prize Fast Forward Award in 2006, 2013 and 2018. The company continues to develop its portfolio, with recent highlights including the InnoBogie bogie frame, which won the ERCI Innovation Award at InnoTrans 2026, the Smart GigaWood Round & Sawn timber transport solution, the publication of the Innofreight Gruppe's first sustainability report, and the 1000th InnoBogie frame manufactured by Innoduler Rail.
