Overview
Insekt-Nytt is a Norwegian popular-science magazine devoted to insects and other arthropods. It is the membership magazine of the Norwegian Entomological Society (Norsk entomologisk forening, NEF), but it can also be subscribed to by non-members. The publication is aimed primarily at amateur entomologists and beginners, yet it maintains a high scientific standard and is also read by experienced entomologists. Members of NEF receive Insekt-Nytt together with the more scientifically oriented, English-language journal Norwegian Journal of Entomology, which appears twice a year. The magazine is published four times a year and is sent to all NEF members. Its editorial office is associated with the insect department of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, and the editor is Anders Endrestøl. The society makes older issues of Insekt-Nytt available online, but the most recent issues are not released until after five to six years. Front covers and tables of contents are posted on the society's website as issues are published, and older volumes are electronically available as PDFs. Insekt-Nytt was founded in 1976, with Trond Hofsvang as its first editor. In its early years the magazine was simply produced in black and white; over time it has become thicker and has gained a number of colour images. Special theme issues have covered topics such as insect collecting (1992 no. 3/4), the society's centenary (2004 no. 1/2, marking NEF's 100 years), and pest insects (2011 no. 2/3). The magazine remains an active publication of the Norwegian Entomological Society, with recent volumes such as volume 48 in 2023.
History
Insekt-Nytt was founded in 1976 as a publication of the Norwegian Entomological Society (Norsk entomologisk forening, NEF). Trond Hofsvang served as its first editor. In its early years the magazine was simply produced in black and white, and it has since grown thicker and added colour images. The magazine is published four times a year and is distributed to all members of NEF. It is written particularly for amateur entomologists and beginners, but maintains a high professional level. Members also receive the more scientifically oriented, English-language journal Norwegian Journal of Entomology, which is published twice a year. Over the decades Insekt-Nytt has produced notable theme issues. In 1992, issue no. 3/4 was devoted to insect collecting, with sixteen authors contributing articles on both common and more specialised techniques for capturing and preparing insects. In 2004, issue no. 1/2 was a centenary issue celebrating NEF's 100 years; in connection with the jubilee the book Entomologiens Historie i Norge (The History of Entomology in Norway) was published, and the issue presented the book and the main features of NEF's long history. In 2011, issue no. 2/3 focused on pest insects — the stinging, biting and itching species that are favourites of the tabloid press. The editorial office is associated with the insect department of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, and the editor is Anders Endrestøl. The society posts front covers and tables of contents on its website as issues are published, and older volumes are made electronically available as PDFs. The most recent issues are not released online until after five to six years. Recent volumes include volume 48 in 2023, with issues no. 1, no. 2 and no. 3/4, and volume 47 in 2022.
