Overview

The Institut d'Estudis Ceretans (IEC) is a non-profit cultural and research entity based at the Casa de Cultura in Puigcerdà, in the Cerdanya comarca of Catalonia, Spain. It was created in 1978, taking over from the Equip de Recerques Ceretanes, which had already organised the first International Colloquium on Archaeology of Puigcerdà in 1968. The institute's activities focus on the study of prehistory, archaeology, history, geography, geology, flora, fauna, ethnology, art, folklore and other cultural aspects of the Cerdanya region, as well as its external relations, particularly with the rest of the Pyrenees. Its work includes the custody and conservation of documents found, duly catalogued and installed, with prior study and cataloguing tasks; the defence, conservation and restoration of all kinds of buildings, constructions, archaeological sites, caves and other places of interest for the region's heritage; and supporting, promoting, proposing and encouraging all acts and activities aimed at the unity of Cerdanya, above all kinds of barriers that historical and political errors of other eras have divided it by. The institute publishes works such as Quaderns d'estudis Ceretans, the journal Ceretània (issues 1 to 6), Sentiments amagats de la gent de Cerdanya, Més sentiments amagats de la gent de Cerdanya, El patrimoni industrial a la Cerdanya, Gentrificació i turistificació a la Cerdanya?, and Reptes i estratègies en el turisme de la Cerdanya davant situacions canviants i de crisi. As a non-profit entity, it operates as a private organisation without a commercial parent company or stock listing.
