Overview
The Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya (IEFC) is a non-profit cultural association founded in 1972 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Its mission is to foster, stimulate and promote the study, research and dissemination of photography, both in person and virtually, using social networks to bring photographic heritage closer to the public. The institute is structured around three departments: the School Department, which offers professional photography training and artistic expression courses, including a three-year Graduat de Fotografia programme as well as specialised workshops and courses; the Documentation and Research Department, which preserves, manages and disseminates documentation on photography and the photographic heritage deposited in its facilities, and which maintains a specialised library and newspaper archive, a technical archive, a photo library and the IEFC Historical Photographic Archive, whose historical holdings comprise more than 800,000 images in original positives and negatives by professional and amateur authors, mainly from the first third of the 20th century, including collections by photojournalist Alexandre Merletti, publisher Lucien Roisin, the Fototípia Thomas fund, and amateurs Antoni Arissa and Emili Godes; and the Cultural Affairs Department, which aims to disseminate and promote photography as a cultural fact through exhibitions, conferences and other non-academic training activities, often in collaboration with other entities such as the Agrupació Fotogràfica de Catalunya and the Asociación de Fotógrafos Profesionales de España. The IEFC also organises and participates in courses on the conservation and management of photographic collections, in collaboration with the School Department or with the Escola Superior d'Arxivística i Gestió de Documents, the Centre de Recerca i Difusió de la Imatge, and the Associació d'Arxivers de Catalunya. Since 2008 it has participated in international events such as the Sony World Photography Awards (Cannes and London) as Spain's representative school, the Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism in Hanover (Germany), Promenades Photographiques de Vendôme (France), Month of Photography in Bratislava (Slovakia), Circulations in Paris (France), and Visa Off in Perpignan (Northern Catalonia). In 2010 the IEFC was awarded the distinction of Entitat d'honor by the Federació Catalana de Fotografia. The institute promotes student participation in national and international festivals, including the Mostra de Joves Creadors de Catalunya, Mostra d'art jove Stripart, Festimatge de Calella, Festival de cultura contemporània Europes, the El Projector cycle of the Fundació Foto Colectania, Punt Multimèdia de Sants, Fòrum de Fotografia documental Can Basté, and the Primera setmana fotogràfica per la Pau at the Castell de Montjuïc. The IEFC is headquartered in Barcelona and operates primarily in Spain and Europe.
