History

Before the centenary of the French Revolution and in a context of affirmation of the Republic, the Mairie de Paris funded the foundation of a chair of history of the Revolution at the Sorbonne, whose first holder was Alphonse Aulard (1849-1928). He was succeeded by Philippe Sagnac (1868-1954) and Albert Mathiez (1874-1932). On 27 October 1937, at the initiative of Jean Zay, Minister of National Education of the Popular Front, the Institut d'histoire de la Révolution française was founded, with Georges Lefebvre as its first director, who had just been elected to the chair of history of the French Revolution. In 2016, the institute was integrated into the Institut d'histoire moderne et contemporaine (IHMC, UMR 8066), which continues to manage its rich documentary collections in the Sorbonne and to promote revolutionary studies. The Bibliothèque d'histoire de la Révolution française (BHRF) is a reference library devoted to the Western revolutions of the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It holds more than 18,000 works, 12,000 titles from the Archives de la Révolution, and 1,300 theses and dissertations, earning it the CollEx label. It was built up through successive acquisitions, donations, and bequests. Since 2009, an online journal, La Révolution, has been published within the research unit and is available on the OpenEdition Journals portal.
