Overview

The Institut français du Cameroun (IFC) is a cultural establishment in Cameroon that forms part of the worldwide network of Instituts français. It was created on 1 January 2012 through the merger of the François-Villon cultural centre in Yaoundé and the Blaise-Cendrars cultural centre in Douala with the Cooperation and Cultural Action Service of the French embassy. This reorganisation was part of a global reform of France's cultural and cooperation network, initiated under a law of 27 July 2010, which replaced cultural activities previously grouped under the association Culturesfrance. The IFC operates two main branches, one in Yaoundé and one in Douala, and offers a wide range of cultural activities alongside French language courses and examinations. Both institutes house media libraries, libraries, internet spaces, classrooms dedicated to courses and exams, and café-restaurants. The IFC organises events with national, regional, or local scope depending on the project, and also participates in external events to promote cultural exchange between France and Cameroon. It maintains close links with honorary consulates, the Consulate General, and the offices of the Alliance française in the country.

History

The Institut français du Cameroun was established on 1 January 2012, resulting from the merger of the François-Villon cultural centre in Yaoundé and the Blaise-Cendrars cultural centre in Douala with the Service de Coopération et d'Action Culturelle of the French embassy. This merger was part of a global reform of France's cultural and cooperation network, initiated by the law of 27 July 2010, which replaced the cultural activities previously grouped under the association Culturesfrance. The reform aimed to bring greater unity and simplicity of management. The university, educational, linguistic, and cultural cooperation services of the French embassy were thus merged to form the Institut français du Cameroun. The IFC maintains close ties with honorary consulates, the Consulate General, and the offices of the Alliance française in the country.
