Overview
The Institut français du Gabon (IFG) is the French cultural and language institute in Gabon, part of the worldwide network of Instituts français. Its single office is based in Libreville. The institute was formally constituted on 3 November 2011 under the authority of the then executive president of the Institut français, Xavier Darcos, as part of a global reform of France's cultural and cooperation network initiated by the law of 27 July 2010. This reform replaced the cultural activities previously grouped under the association Culturesfrance. The university, educational, linguistic, and cultural cooperation services of the French Embassy were merged to form the IFG, which maintains close ties with the Consulate General, the Alliance française office, and Gabonese administrative and university authorities. The building that houses the institute was constructed in 1991 on plans by architect François Lombard and was officially inaugurated in May 1994 as the Centre culturel français Saint-Exupéry de Libreville. In 2025, after 12 months of closure for renovation work, the IFG returned to its usual location after having been temporarily installed at the Cercle Pompidou in La Sablière, in the north of Libreville. The IFG offers French courses and official certifications, access to a collection of books, documents, and video games, and information on studying in France. Its cultural center participates in the local scene, creating events with national, regional, or local scope, and hosts around 150 cultural events annually. It also takes part in external events to promote culture and exchanges between France and Gabon, and develops partnerships with governmental and non-governmental entities. In November 2025 it hosted concerts by Gabonese artist Tita Nzebi. The institute houses a media library of 30,000 works and organizes about 300 cultural events per year, welcoming between 5,000 and 6,000 people per month. In addition to its cultural programming, the IFG has a digital library, a cinema, a 400-seat performance hall, a film library, a national archive collection of 3,000 documents on Gabon, a cybercafé, and a cafeteria. Since 2022 it has hosted the Festival international du livre gabonais et des arts.
History
The Institut français du Gabon (IFG) is part of the worldwide network of Instituts français. Its single office is based in Libreville. The building was constructed in 1991 on plans by architect François Lombard and was officially inaugurated in May 1994 as the Centre culturel français Saint-Exupéry de Libreville. The IFG as an organization was constituted on 3 November 2011, under the authority of the then executive president of the Institut français, Xavier Darcos, as part of a global reform of the cultural and cooperation network of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated by the law of 27 July 2010, replacing the French cultural activities in the country that had until then been grouped within the association Culturesfrance. This reorganization brought better unity and greater simplicity of management. The university, educational, linguistic, and cultural cooperation services of the French Embassy thus merged to become the Institut français du Gabon. They maintain close ties with the Consulate General, the Alliance française office, and with the administrative and university authorities of the country. In 2025, following 12 months of closure for renovation work, the Institut français du Gabon (IFG), which had been installed at the Cercle Pompidou in La Sablière in the north of the commune of Libreville, returned to its usual location.
