Overview

Institut Galilée is the exact-sciences component of Université Sorbonne Paris Nord (formerly Université Paris 13), based on the Villetaneuse campus in the northern suburbs of Paris. It was created in 1991 as an internal institute of Université Paris 13 by merging the former 'Centre scientifique et polytechnique' teaching and research unit with two existing engineering programmes in materials and telecommunications that dated back to 1976. The institute occupies about 30,000 m² of premises, of which some 5,200 m² are used by its engineering school, Sup Galilée. The institute brings together generalist licence and master degrees in mathematics, computer science, physics and chemistry, the Sup Galilée engineering school, and seven research laboratories. Its laboratories cover a broad scientific spectrum from mathematics to chemistry, including computer science, physics, engineering sciences, materials and biomaterials. Most of them are associated with major French research organisations such as CNRS and INSERM, and they participate in six LABEX and one EQUIPEX supported by the national 'investissements d'avenir' programme. Sup Galilée is one of the French engineering schools accredited to deliver the engineering diploma. Students are admitted to the first year through the Geipi Polytech competitive entrance examination for final-year scientific baccalaureate pupils, and the first two years can be taken as an integrated preparatory cycle. Sup Galilée offers engineering training in five specialities, which over time have included telecommunications and networks (created in 1986), applied mathematics and scientific computing (1993), computer science (1999), energetics (2008, replacing Materials created in 1971) and instrumentation (2019). Institut Galilée appears annually in the Eduniversal ranking for its master's programmes, and its integrated engineering school features in various rankings of the best French engineering schools. As a public higher-education and research institution, it is state-owned and attached to Université Sorbonne Paris Nord; it is not a commercial company, but it operates as a distinct institutional brand within the French university system.

History

Institut Galilée was created in 1991 as an internal institute of Université Paris 13. It was formed by bringing together the former teaching and research unit 'Centre scientifique et polytechnique' and two engineering programmes in materials and telecommunications that had existed since 1976. The institute thus combined generalist scientific education with professional engineering training from its foundation. The engineering programmes developed progressively. Telecommunications and networks was created in 1986. Applied mathematics and scientific computing followed in 1993. Computer science was added in 1999. Energetics was created in 2008, replacing the Materials programme that had been created in 1971. Instrumentation was introduced in 2019. The integrated preparatory cycle of Sup Galilée, covering the first two years after the baccalaureate, has operated since 2008. Over time the institute became the exact-sciences component of Université Sorbonne Paris Nord, the new name of Université Paris 13. Its research laboratories, largely associated with CNRS and INSERM, gained national and international recognition, as reflected in national evaluations and participation in six LABEX and one EQUIPEX supported by the 'investissements d'avenir' programme. The institute occupies 30,000 m² of premises, with 5,200 m² used by Sup Galilée. Sup Galilée is one of the French engineering schools accredited to deliver the engineering diploma. Students are admitted to the first year through the Geipi Polytech competitive examination for pupils in their final scientific year (or those who obtained the scientific baccalaureate the previous year). The school offers five engineering specialities. Institut Galilée appears annually in the Eduniversal ranking for its master's programmes, and its integrated engineering school features in various rankings of the best French engineering schools.
