Overview

Instituto Conhecimento Liberta (ICL) is a Brazilian education and culture institute founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by former banker Eduardo Moreira, digital marketing specialist Rafael Donatiello, and sociologist Jessé Souza. It describes itself as committed to critical thinking and the progressive field, bringing together courses, analysis, debates and journalism on economics, history and society from a left-wing perspective that defends democracy, social rights and the reduction of inequalities. The institute operates a digital platform for journalism, education and culture, financed solely by subscribers without sponsorships or advertisers of any kind, a model it says guarantees "editorial independence and pedagogical freedom." ICL offers more than 300 free online courses covering topics from philosophy and spirituality to Brazilian history and international politics, alongside films, series, documentaries and exclusive digital books curated by Editora Instituto Conhecimento Liberta. Membership starts at R$ 57 per month. In 2024 the platform surpassed 100,000 subscribers, consolidating itself as an audience leader in its internet segment, and it was announced that Felipe Neto had become a partner in the venture. That same year ICL began offering a lato sensu postgraduate program with the Fundação Escola de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo (FESPSP), a 348-hour course conceived by Jessé Souza and coordinated by historian Lindener Pareto and sociologist Rodrigo Estramanho. It also launched a special entrepreneurship course, "Empreendedor Mestre," with its own networking platform and complete financial education training. Through its YouTube channel, ICL provides about 8 hours of daily content, including programs such as Desperta ICL, ICL Notícias 1ª and 2ª Edição, Rádio News, Mercado e Investimento, Rolê, ICL Urgente and Provocação Histórica. Its editorial staff includes journalists Chico Pinheiro, Rodrigo Vianna, Chico Alves, Cristina Serra, William De Lucca, Xico Sá and Heloisa Villela, with educators and academics such as Marilena Chauí, Jessé Souza, Leonardo Boff, Lindener Pareto, Suze Piza, Renato Janine Ribeiro, Muniz Sodré and Frei Betto contributing to the educational platform. From 2024 ICL expanded investment in documentaries and special series, producing works on contemporary political events, international conflicts and social issues. Its first documentary was the feature De Quanta Terra Precisa o Homem?, directed by Adilson Mendes, selected for the 46th Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo. In 2025 it launched Revista Liberta, a weekly digital publication for exclusive reports, conjunctural analysis and opinion articles, and created Editora Conhecimento Liberta, which publishes printed books. In 2026, the book É só um jogo - E se nada disso for real? reached first place among the country's best-selling fiction books on Veja magazine's weekly list. The institute received the Medalha Pedro Ernesto in 2025.

History

Instituto Conhecimento Liberta (ICL) was created in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, by Eduardo Moreira, a former banker, Rafael Donatiello, a digital marketing specialist, and Jessé Souza, a renowned Brazilian sociologist. The institute was founded as an education and culture organization committed to critical thinking and the progressive field, and over the years it built a digital platform for journalism, education and culture. From the outset it was financed solely by subscribers, without recourse to sponsorships or advertisers of any kind, a decision it says was made to guarantee "editorial independence and pedagogical freedom." The platform grew around a news portal, ICL Notícias, and an educational offering of free online courses. Its editorial staff came to include journalists such as Chico Pinheiro, Rodrigo Vianna, Chico Alves, Cristina Serra, William De Lucca, Xico Sá and Heloisa Villela, while educators and academics including Marilena Chauí, Jessé Souza, Leonardo Boff, Lindener Pareto, Suze Piza, Renato Janine Ribeiro, Muniz Sodré and Frei Betto contributed to the educational platform. Among the programs produced by the portal are Desperta ICL, Em detalhes, Provocação Histórica, Rolê, Chico Pinheiro Entrevista, Espiritualidade na Ação, ICL Mercado, the newscasts N1 and N2, and Webcomunistas. In 2024, ICL surpassed 100,000 subscribers, consolidating itself as an audience leader in its internet segment. Also in 2024, it was announced that Felipe Neto had become a partner in the venture. That year the platform began offering, in partnership with the Fundação Escola de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo (FESPSP), a lato sensu postgraduate program with a 348-hour workload, conceived by Jessé Souza and coordinated by historian Lindener Pareto and sociologist Rodrigo Estramanho. ICL also launched a special entrepreneurship course, "Empreendedor Mestre," with its own networking platform and a complete financial education training. From 2024, ICL expanded its investment in documentaries and special series, producing works about contemporary political events, international conflicts and social issues. Its first documentary was the feature De Quanta Terra Precisa o Homem?, directed by Adilson Mendes. The work follows the relationship between Eduardo Moreira and the Landless Workers' Movement (MST) and was selected for the 46th Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo. The documentary brings together interviews with figures such as Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Ciro Gomes, Luiz Gonzaga Belluzzo, Noam Chomsky, Danny Glover and Wagner Moura. Its launch was marked by a debut debate with the participation of influencer, historian and MST activist Laura Sabino, MST national leader João Pedro Stédile and Eduardo Moreira. These productions became part of the institution's regular programming alongside the news portal and its journalistic programs. In 2025, ICL launched Revista Liberta, a weekly digital publication dedicated to exclusive reports, conjunctural analysis and opinion articles. Integrated with the institute's other editorial initiatives, the magazine expanded ICL's reach by bringing together columnists, correspondents, researchers and specialists. In addition to regular editions, the publication produces special issues and exclusive columns for platform subscribers. Among these initiatives is the creation of Editora Conhecimento Liberta, which extends ICL's original proposal by bringing part of its educational work to printed books. One example is A última chance: a denúncia da PGR e o futuro da democracia, organized by Rafael Valim and launched in 2025 in partnership between Editora Conhecimento Liberta and Editora Contracorrente. In 2026, the book É só um jogo - E se nada disso for real? reached first place among the country's best-selling fiction books on Veja magazine's weekly list. Today the publisher offers books by João Cezar de Castro Rocha, Noam Chomsky, Josa Coelho Irigoite, Jamil Chade, Marilena Chauí and other thinkers, with titles including Teoria do fetichismo: o movimento crítico de Marx, Paulo Freire: O projeto e os seus princípios, História do Movimento Negro no Brasil, O que nos faz pensar: Filosofia para nossos fins, História do brincar e das brincadeiras no Brasil and As raízes religiosas da racionalidade moderna: para pensar com Max Weber. In 2025 the institute received the Medalha Pedro Ernesto.
