History
ISPN's history begins in 1990, when a group of researchers decided to join efforts to qualify and document their research and to act in defense of the environment in dialogue with social debates; from this initiative the Instituto Sociedade, População e Natureza (ISPN) was born. In 1994, ISPN was selected by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to coordinate the Small Grants Programme (SGP) in Brazil, focused on the Cerrado; the SGP supports community-based projects in more than 120 countries with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This experience drove its work with ecosystem-social projects, which today gain strength with Fundo Ecos, an independent philanthropy mechanism for socio-environmental justice. In 2013, ISPN expanded its work to the Caatinga, and two years later, with support from the Amazon Fund, it began supporting initiatives also in the states of Maranhão, Tocantins and Mato Grosso. Since then, it has supported more than a thousand projects.
