Overview

The Instituto Tecnológico Superior del Oriente del Estado de Hidalgo (ITESA) is a public higher-education institution located in the municipality of Apan, in the eastern part of the State of Hidalgo, Mexico. It began operations on 6 September 2000 with two engineering programs — Ingeniería en Sistemas Computacionales and Ingeniería Electromecánica — and an initial cohort of 133 students (101 in computer systems and 32 in electromechanics). Over the following two decades it steadily expanded its academic offer, adding civil engineering and food-industry engineering, then mechatronics and a bachelor's degree in administration, followed by business management engineering, logistics engineering, automotive systems engineering and, in 2018, a bachelor's degree in tourism. Today ITESA awards undergraduate degrees across engineering, administration and tourism, and offers two master's programs: Maestría en Sistemas Computacionales and Maestría en Ciencias de los Alimentos. The institute describes itself with the motto "Por un México Tecnológicamente Independiente" (For a Technologically Independent Mexico). Its stated mission is to provide quality educational and extension services that form citizens who promote social and productive development with a perspective of equality, social responsibility and a global vision. Its vision for 2030 is to be an internationally recognized agent of change, known for the competitiveness of its graduates, its contribution to sustainable national development through technology transfer, and its role in building a more egalitarian society. Its declared values are responsibility, respect, honesty, integrity and human sense. ITESA's campus infrastructure includes two departmental academic units, two multifunctional laboratory and workshop units, a cafeteria, a library and an auditorium, with a total of 29 classrooms and 10 workshops. It operates basic-science, language and electromechanics laboratories; food-industry, civil-engineering and mechatronics workshops; a two-level computer center with capacity for 250 computers; and sports facilities including a football pitch, two indoor football courts and two courts used for basketball and volleyball. The institute also engages in outreach activities such as scholarships, linkage with industry, mobility, research, a course catalogue, a digital library, CONOCER certifications and social service (retribución social). As a public institution, ITESA is part of Mexico's public higher-education landscape and is associated with the Tecnológico Nacional de México system. It is governed by a series of directors, beginning with Álvaro Ángeles Olivares (2000–2007) and continuing through Gerardo Téllez Reyes (2007–2012), José Antonio Zamora Guido (2012–2016), Concepción Gómez Juárez (2016–2018) and Justo Juan Manuel Martínez Licona (2018 to date). The institute maintains an active web presence with admission announcements, academic calendars, job postings and institutional information, and it states a commitment to labor equality and non-discrimination.

History

The Instituto Tecnológico Superior del Oriente del Estado de Hidalgo (ITESA) began operations on 6 September 2000 in the municipality of Apan, in the eastern part of the State of Hidalgo, Mexico. It opened with only two academic programs: Ingeniería en Sistemas Computacionales and Ingeniería Electromecánica. The initial student body numbered 133, with 101 students in computer systems engineering and 32 in electromechanics. The following year, the institute added two more programs: Ingeniería Civil and Ingeniería en Industrias Alimentarias. In 2007, ITESA expanded its academic offer again, adding Ingeniería Mecatrónica and the Licenciatura en Administración. In 2010, it introduced Ingeniería en Gestión Empresarial. The year 2011 saw the launch of Ingeniería en Logística, and in 2016 the institute opened Ingeniería en Sistemas Automotrices. The most recent addition came in 2018 with the Licenciatura en Turismo. Alongside these undergraduate programs, ITESA developed two master's degrees: the Maestría en Sistemas Computacionales and the Maestría en Ciencias de los Alimentos. Leadership of the institute has changed several times over its history. The founding director was Álvaro Ángeles Olivares, who served from 2000 to 2007. He was succeeded by Gerardo Téllez Reyes (2007–2012), then José Antonio Zamora Guido (2012–2016), Concepción Gómez Juárez (2016–2018), and Justo Juan Manuel Martínez Licona, who has led the institution since 2018. Over the years, ITESA has built up a substantial campus infrastructure. It now includes two departmental academic units, two multifunctional laboratory and workshop units, a cafeteria, a library and an auditorium, with a total of 29 classrooms and 10 workshops. Specialized facilities include basic-science, language and electromechanics laboratories; food-industry, civil-engineering and mechatronics workshops; a two-level computer center with capacity for 250 computers; and sports installations such as a football pitch, two indoor football courts and two courts used for basketball and volleyball. The institute also offers a range of extension and support services, including scholarships, linkage activities, mobility programs, research, a course catalogue, a digital library, CONOCER certifications and social service (retribución social). Its institutional motto is "Por un México Tecnológicamente Independiente" (For a Technologically Independent Mexico).
