Overview
Interlinea edizioni is an independent Italian publishing house founded in 1991 in Novara by Roberto Cicala and Carlo Robiglio. It began publishing in 1992 with Dante Graziosi's 'Una Topolino amaranto' and has since built a catalogue of over 1,000 titles across some 20 series in its first two decades. The house is known for literary criticism, poetry, children's literature and a dedicated Christmas series, and it maintains strong ties to its home territory of Novara and the eastern Piedmont region. It publishes the 'Le rane' children's series on ecological paper derived from algae of the Venice lagoon, launched in 2001 with a text by Gianni Rodari. Interlinea also curates national editions of works by Matteo Maria Boiardo and Giovanni Verga, and collaborates with several universities. Its digital editions are available on the Torrossa.it platform. In 2006 it received the Premio Nazionale Cultura from the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and since 1995 it has promoted the 'Storia di Natale' literary prize for children's literature.
History
Interlinea edizioni was founded in 1991 in Novara by Roberto Cicala and Carlo Robiglio, partly as a book-form translation of the research and cultural promotion programmes of the Centro novarese di studi letterari, whose scientific committee members became consultants to the publishing house. Publishing began in 1992 with 'Una Topolino amaranto' by the Novara writer Dante Graziosi. In 1993 the house took part for the first time in the Salone internazionale del libro. The following year saw the development of a focus on poetry through the 'Lyra' series, which welcomed significant collections by major authors including Nobel laureates Eugenio Montale and Seamus Heaney, with particular attention to dialect poetry, for example by Paolo Bertolani and Franco Loi. Interlinea collaborated with the University of Pavia, acquiring from Vallecchi the literary journal 'Autografo'; with the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan through the series 'Biblioteca letteraria dell'Italia unita'; with the Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale Amedeo Avogadro with 'Biblioteca del Piemonte Orientale'; and with Princeton University on conference proceedings about Luigi Pirandello, Salvatore Quasimodo and other twentieth-century authors. It curates the national editions of the works of Matteo Maria Boiardo and Giovanni Verga. In 1996 the publication of the unpublished story 'Tentazioni' by Mario Soldati came out on the occasion of the writer's 90th birthday. After the death of the publisher Vanni Scheiwiller, Interlinea took on the publication of books by and about the poet Clemente Rebora, including annotated editions of 'Curriculum vitae' and 'Frammenti lirici' and an unpublished 'Diario intimo'. It acquired the journals 'Nuova corrente' and 'Microprovincia'. It also publishes texts by philosophers such as Carlo Sini, Francesca Rigotti and Silvano Petrosino, and journalists such as Alberto Toscano. A section of the house is dedicated to children's stories with the 'Le rane' series, printed on ecological paper derived from algae of the Venice lagoon, inaugurated in 2001 with a text by Gianni Rodari, 'Il ragioniere pesce del Cusio', followed by books by other Italian authors (Roberto Piumini, Elve Fortis de Hironymis, Anna Lavatelli, Guido Quarzo and others). The two founders have always maintained a link with their territory of origin, and for this reason every year they publish texts on history, art and culture related to the Novara area and eastern Piedmont, also printing the journal 'Novarien'. Interlinea editions have a digital version available on the Torrossa.it platform. In 2017 the 25 years of books were celebrated and the historical catalogue of the first 25 years was set up. In 2006 Interlinea was awarded the Premio Nazionale Cultura by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers for its activity in the publishing sector. In 1999 it received the San Vidal prize of Venice for the best series ('Nativitas'), and the year before the Orta prize for the poetry series 'Lyra'. In 2011 it received the honorary plaque of the Città di Arona Gian Vincenzo Omodei Zorini prize. Since 1995 the publishing house has promoted the 'Storia di Natale' literary prize for children's literature.
