Overview
The Internationaal-Constantin-Brunner-Instituut (ICBI), also known in German as the Internationales Constantin Brunner Institut, is a cultural foundation founded in 1947 in The Hague, the Netherlands. It is dedicated to the intellectual and cultural legacy of the German-Jewish philosopher Constantin Brunner (1862–1937). The ICBI was the older of two foundations devoted to Brunner, alongside the Constantin-Brunner-Stiftung in Hamburg, which dissolved in 2021 and merged with the ICBI. The foundation's stated goals include reissuing Brunner's works, many of which were destroyed during the Nazi regime, promoting research on his thought in science, philosophy, art, and literature, and discussing the relevance of his practical philosophy for understanding social and religious problems. The ICBI has published new editions, translations, and commentaries on Brunner's works, organized lectures and conferences, and supported research. Until 2008, it maintained an archive of Brunner's estate and his last study; the archive was later transferred to the Leo Baeck Institute in Berlin, and key parts of his study went to the Jewish Museum in Berlin. The foundation is registered as a cultural foundation at the Chamber of Commerce in The Hague (KvK # 41152272) and is currently chaired by Dr. Jürgen Stenzel. It operates a website and an antiquarian online bookshop, and maintains a Facebook page. The ICBI continues to be active in publishing and promoting Brunner's philosophy, including recent Dutch translations of his works.
History
The Internationaal-Constantin-Brunner-Instituut (ICBI) was founded in 1947 in The Hague by friends and admirers of Constantin Brunner who had been scattered around the world by the turmoil of war and Nazi persecution. The Hague was Brunner's last place of residence, and the foundation was registered there as a cultural foundation in 1950 (Chamber of Commerce Haaglanden # 41152272). Until 2008, the ICBI preserved Brunner's estate in its own archive as well as his last study. The archive was subsequently transferred to the Leo Baeck Institute in Berlin, where it is fully accessible to the public. The essential parts of Brunner's last study were given to the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Over the decades, the ICBI has published new editions of Brunner's works, translations, and commentaries, organized lectures and conferences, and supported various research projects. Since Jürgen Stenzel assumed the chairmanship, the ICBI was united in personal union with the Hamburg Constantin-Brunner-Stiftung, which formally dissolved at the end of 2021 and initiated a merger with the ICBI, so that existing resources could be concentrated on the larger foundation. The ICBI continues to operate a website and an antiquarian online bookshop, and maintains a Facebook page.
