History
The International Union of Economists (IUE) was founded in 1991 in the Bulgarian city of Sandanski. On the initiative of the All-Union Economic Society (VEO), economists, public figures, and entrepreneurs from several countries gathered in Sandanski for the founding congress of the International Union of Economists. From the outset, members of the new Union understood that regardless of political processes, it was necessary for economists to communicate not on an ideological basis but on a strictly professional one, maximally free from ideologemes. At that transitional time, the United Nations and other authoritative international structures supported and facilitated the creation of public associations involving countries with changing economies. As the founders of the Union say, they sought to unite the intellectual forces of professionals from different countries and to involve scientists, politicians, business people, and public representatives interested in reducing the social costs of the modern economic world order in an expert dialogue on the most important problems. The International Union of Economists quickly gained weight; since 1995 it has been associated with the Department of Public Information of the non-governmental organizations section. In 1999 the International Union of Economists was granted General Consultative Status by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which was reconfirmed and extended in March 2021. Currently only 142 international non-governmental organizations in the world are endowed with this high status. The International Union of Economists is also associated with the UN Department of Global Communications. The IUE has the right to use the platform of the UN Economic and Social Council for speeches within the framework of the UN General Assembly. The headquarters of the International Union of Economists is located in the Russian Federation (Moscow, 22-A Tverskaya St., Dom ekonomista).
