Overview

Internet Society Gambia (ISOC Gambia) is the Gambian chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC), a global nonprofit organisation founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet-related standards, education, and policy. As a national chapter, ISOC Gambia works to advance ISOC's mission within The Gambia: ensuring the open development, evolution, and use of the Internet for the benefit of people throughout the country. The chapter serves as a national clearinghouse for Internet information and education, facilitates and coordinates Internet-related initiatives, and provides leadership in addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet in The Gambia. The chapter is active in Internet governance, cybersecurity awareness, and digital policy. It has organised and participated in events such as the West Africa Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) and the West Africa School on Internet Governance, and it hosts the Gambia IGF and Youth IGF initiatives. In 2022, ISOC Gambia held an online webinar and workshop on Internet safety and encryption as part of Global Encryption Day, promoting the use of encryption for safe online communication. The chapter also engages in outreach on data protection legislation and emerging technologies such as blockchain-based land registries. ISOC Gambia collaborates with regional and international partners, including the Africa Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD), NIC Sénégal, the Regional Internet Registry for Africa (AFRINIC), and the African Network Operators Group (AfNOG). Its activities are guided by an elected executive board and are aligned with ISOC's global mission. The chapter maintains a website at isoc.gm, where it publishes news, event announcements, and resources related to Internet issues in The Gambia.

History

Internet Society Gambia is the national chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC) in The Gambia. ISOC itself was founded in 1992 as a nonprofit organisation to provide leadership in Internet-related standards, education, and policy. The Gambia chapter operates as part of ISOC's global network of chapters, which extend the organisation's mission to the local level. The chapter has been involved in Internet governance activities in West Africa. In July 2019, alongside the National IGF, the 11th edition of the West Africa Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) was held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel in Kololi, The Gambia, from 25th to 26th July, with over 400 participants from 11 countries. The chapter also participated in the 11th Edition of the West Africa School on Internet Governance Workshop. In 2021, ISOC Gambia conducted an online consultation workshop on data protection legislation and held its first Youth IGF event in partnership with local civil society organizations and the Gambia IGF secretariat. The Youth IGF aimed to build awareness, spark conversations, and strengthen youth participation in shaping the digital future. In 2022, as part of Global Encryption Day and Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the chapter organized an online webinar and workshop on Internet safety and encryption, live-streamed via livestream.com/internetsociety/encryptgambia2022. The event promoted the use of encryption for good and educated participants on online safety and end-to-end encryption for safe communication online. The chapter has also engaged with emerging technology topics, such as the launch of the Gambia Land Registry on-chain, indicating an interest in blockchain applications for public services. It collaborates with regional partners including the Africa Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD), NIC Sénégal, the Regional Internet Registry for Africa (AFRINIC), and the African Network Operators Group (AfNOG). ISOC Gambia is governed by an elected executive board, which was newly elected at some point prior to the events described on its website.
