Overview

The Internet Technology Center (ITC; Armenian: Ինտերնետ տեխնոլոգիաների կենտրոն, ԻՏԿ) is an Armenian company whose mission is the development and promotion of the .am and .հայ country-code top-level domains in Armenia. Founded in 2001, it operates as the registry for these domains, providing registration services through accredited registrar companies, accrediting organizations registered in Armenia as registrars, and authorizing them to provide domain registration services under .am and .հայ. It also carries out technical and technological maintenance of DNS, ensures the confidentiality of personal data (whois), and provides DNSSEC and Registrar Lock services. In addition, ITC supplies information about domain names registered in the registry database and organizes periodic discussions on technical, legal and other issues with registrars and other organizations to support the development of Armenia's domain and technology sector. The history of the .am domain goes back to 1993, when Armenia, after participating in the first INET93 conference, obtained the right to register its national domain under the .am name. Before that, as worldwide, domain names in Armenia were registered under the generic top-level domains .com, .org and .net. At the conference, the right to manage national domains was announced and the requirements for cooperation with the global corporation were presented. Armenia's delegate Igor Mkrtumyan, together with a group of dedicated like-minded people, secured the mandatory conditions for obtaining the right to manage domain names and later the operation of the .am domain. Management of the national domain was assumed by the Internet Users Union, the "Internet Community" NGO. August 26, 1994 is considered the official launch date of the .am domain, while the national .հայ domain was launched on May 5, 2016. As of 2024, 44,793 domains were registered under .am and 980 under .հայ. ITC is a small, specialized registry operator rather than a consumer-facing brand. Its "customers" are registrars and, indirectly, domain holders in Armenia and the Armenian diaspora. Its public-facing activities include maintaining the registry database, publishing information about registered domain names, and facilitating dialogue among registrars and other stakeholders. The company's official website is itc.am.
