Overview
Interporto Servizi Cargo (ISC) was an Italian freight railway undertaking founded in Nola in 2009 and controlled by Interporto Campano, the inland terminal complex in the Campania region. It operated in synergy with Nuovo Operatore Intermodale (formerly ISC Intermodal), an intermodal operator belonging to the same group. ISC represented the rail freight arm of a wider economic system gravitating around the Campania area, and it ceased operations on 1 January 2023. After its incorporation in 2009, the company spent roughly two years obtaining the necessary authorizations and traction equipment, launching regular services in 2010. It held freight railway undertaking licence No. 57, issued on 11 May 2009, and received its Safety Certificate to operate on the RFI network from the National Agency for Railway Safety on 29 December of the same year. Its early operations were run with leased locomotives, including E.483 units from Rail Traction Company and E.189 units from MRCE-Dispolok, before dedicated units arrived. ISC built a reputation as a national operator specialized in hauling international shipments on Italian soil. In March 2012 it took over the Busto Arsizio–Bologna service previously operated by NordCargo, and during 2012 it saw a significant 30% growth in the number of trains operated compared with the previous year, helped by a new Busto Arsizio–Bologna service fully purchased by Hupac and by partnerships with European logistics operators such as Belgium's IFB and Germany's Kombiverkehr. Its production structure included weekly pairs on routes such as Milano Smistamento–Pomezia Santa Palomba–Nola Interporto, Nola Interporto–Bologna Interporto–Verona Quadrante Europa, Bologna Interporto–Fiorenzuola–Busto Arsizio, and Melzo Scalo–Frosinone–Nola Interporto in partnership with Oceanogate. Shunting and terminal operations at Interporto Campano, including work for Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori, also played a non-secondary role. The company was chaired by engineer Giuseppe Sciarrone, and among its past presidents was Carlo Calenda, later Minister of Economic Development. In 2016 the Tribunal of Nola ruled that a dismissal carried out against a worker and trade union representative of Interporto Servizi Cargo was illegitimate; these rulings were confirmed in 2018 by the Court of Appeal of Naples. ISC was a member of the Italian Railway Freight Alliance (IRFA), which allowed it to use locomotives in service from other member companies. After deciding to cease activity from 1 January 2023, ISC remains a notable example of a regional inland-terminal-backed rail freight operator in Italy.
History
Interporto Servizi Cargo (ISC) was founded in Nola in 2009 as an Italian freight railway undertaking controlled by Interporto Campano. It operated in synergy with Nuovo Operatore Intermodale (formerly ISC Intermodal), an intermodal operator belonging to the same group. ISC represented the rail freight operator of a broader economic system gravitating around the Campania area. After its incorporation in 2009, the company spent about two years acquiring the necessary authorizations to operate and equipping itself with the required traction material, launching a series of regular services in 2010. It held freight railway undertaking licence No. 57, issued on 11 May 2009, and the Safety Certificate to operate on the RFI network was issued by the National Agency for Railway Safety on 29 December of the same year. Route-knowledge runs on the Simplon and Gotthard lines, carried out for connections operated on behalf of Hupac, allowed the company to extend its range of action beyond national borders. In March 2012 ISC took over the Busto Arsizio–Bologna service previously operated by NordCargo. During 2012 the company saw significant growth in the number of trains operated, up 30% compared with the previous year, thanks above all to the launch of a new Busto Arsizio–Bologna service entirely purchased by Hupac and to partnerships signed with European logistics operators such as Belgium's IFB and Germany's Kombiverkehr. This consolidation phase characterized the company as a national operator specialized in hauling international shipments on Italian soil: on behalf of IFB, for traffic from Belgium directed from Milan to Pomezia and Nola, ISC operated among other routes on the Milano–Chiasso line. Within a year, its production was structured as follows: 6 weekly pairs Milano Smistamento–Pomezia Santa Palomba–Nola Interporto; 5 weekly pairs Nola Interporto–Bologna Interporto–Verona Quadrante Europa; 5 weekly pairs Bologna Interporto–Fiorenzuola–Busto Arsizio; and 3 weekly pairs Melzo Scalo–Frosinone–Nola Interporto in partnership with Oceanogate. Among ISC's activities, shunting and terminal operations at Interporto Campano also played a non-secondary role, with operations carried out also on behalf of Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori. Following some individual dismissals ordered by ISC, the Tribunal of Nola in 2016 declared illegitimate the dismissal carried out against a worker and trade union representative of Interporto Servizi Cargo. These rulings were confirmed in 2018 by the Court of Appeal of Naples. ISC was chaired by engineer Giuseppe Sciarrone. Among its presidents was Carlo Calenda, later Minister of Economic Development. The company was a member of the Italian Railway Freight Alliance (IRFA), which allowed it to have locomotives in service from other member companies. From 1 January 2023 ISC decided to cease activity.
