Overview
Investec is an international specialist banking and wealth-management group with roots in Johannesburg and a major operating presence in both South Africa and the United Kingdom. Founded in 1974 by Larry Nestadt, Errol Grolman and Ian Kantor as a small leasing and financing business, it developed through organic expansion, acquisitions and the addition of banking, capital-markets and investment-management capabilities. The group obtained a banking licence in 1980 and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1986 after combining with the trust company Metboard. Its early growth established the specialist, entrepreneurial model that continues to define the brand. Investec entered the United Kingdom in 1992 through the acquisition of Allied Trust Bank. During the late 1990s it expanded its London platform through the purchases of Guinness Mahon, Henderson Crosthwaite and Hambros. These transactions strengthened its merchant banking, stockbroking, corporate-finance and private-client capabilities. The group later added businesses in consumer and specialist lending, wealth management, securities and asset management, including Kensington Group, Evolution Group and NCB in Ireland. In 2002, Investec adopted a dual-listed-company structure linking Investec plc in the United Kingdom with Investec Limited in South Africa. The two entities remain separately incorporated and listed, but operate as a unified economic enterprise with aligned shareholder interests. Investec’s activities are generally organised around specialist banking and wealth. Its banking businesses include private banking for high-net-worth and high-income individuals, as well as corporate and investment banking covering lending, transactional banking, treasury, trading, advisory work, investment services and corporate finance. Its wealth businesses have served private clients, families, entrepreneurs and institutions through investment management, financial planning and related advisory services. The group’s positioning is deliberately narrower and more relationship-led than that of a universal retail bank: it emphasises specialist expertise, complex financing, entrepreneurial decision-making and long-term client relationships. A major structural change occurred in 2020, when the group separated its asset-management business through a demerger and listing of Ninety One plc. This followed a strategic review announced in 2018 and allowed the investment-management operation to pursue its own publicly listed identity. In 2023, Investec agreed to sell its United Kingdom and Channel Islands wealth and investment businesses to Rathbones for £839 million; the transaction gave Investec Group a 41% interest in Rathbones and excluded its Swiss bank and other international wealth activities. The transaction further concentrated Investec’s retained activities around specialist banking and selected international wealth operations. Investec is dual-listed on the London Stock Exchange and Johannesburg Stock Exchange and has been a constituent of the FTSE 100. Its principal geographic centres are the United Kingdom and South Africa, with additional banking or specialist-finance operations in Ireland, Switzerland, Mauritius, Guernsey, India, Jersey and the United States. The brand also has a visible sponsorship profile, particularly in rugby, cricket, hockey, horse racing and education. In 2023 it became primary sponsor of the European Rugby Champions Cup under an agreement running to 2028. In South Africa, the group has also promoted transformation, empowerment financing and educational programmes intended to broaden access to mathematics, science, technology and software-engineering opportunities.
History
Investec began in Johannesburg in 1974 as a small leasing and finance company founded by Larry Nestadt, Errol Grolman and Ian Kantor. It secured a banking licence in 1980 and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1986 after merging with Metboard, a trust company. In 1988, Investec Bank Limited was reorganised into Investec Group Limited, with management and employees gaining control of the company. The group expanded through a combination of acquisitions and internal development. In 1990 it acquired I. Kuper & Company, Corporate Merchant Bank and Reichmans, adding property-management, merchant-banking and trade-finance capabilities. Its first international acquisition came in 1992, when it purchased London-based Allied Trust Bank and established a platform in the United Kingdom. In 1998 Investec acquired Guinness Mahon, its stockbroking arm Henderson Crosthwaite and the merchant bank Hambros. These transactions made London a central component of the group’s international business. Investec first listed in London in 2002 and implemented a dual-listed-company structure linking Investec plc and Investec Limited. The entities remain legally separate, with Investec plc holding most non-Southern African operations and Investec Limited holding most Southern African operations, while contractual arrangements allow them to function economically as one group. In 2003, an empowerment transaction resulted in partners acquiring a 21.5% interest in the South African-listed Investec entity. During the 2000s and 2010s, Investec reshaped its wealth, lending and capital-markets businesses. It sold its UK private-client stockbroking operation Carr Sheppards Crosthwaite in 2005 while retaining an interest in the enlarged Rensburg Sheppards group. It acquired Kensington Group and Experien in 2007, acquired the remaining shares in Rensburg Sheppards in 2010 and rebranded the resulting wealth operation as Investec Wealth & Investment. In 2011 it acquired Evolution Group, and in 2012 it completed the purchase of Irish broker NCB. In 2017, Amicus Commercial Finance became part of the group and was renamed Investec Capital Solutions. The group undertook a significant portfolio reorganisation after a 2018 strategic review. Investec Asset Management was separated from the group and demerged in 2020 as Ninety One plc, named with reference to the investment firm’s South African origins in 1991. In 2023, Investec agreed to sell its UK and Channel Islands wealth and investment businesses to Rathbones for £839 million. Investec retained its Swiss bank and other international wealth interests, while receiving a 41% stake in Rathbones. Investec’s public identity has also been shaped by sponsorships and social-investment programmes. It has sponsored rugby competitions and teams, England Test cricket, the England and Great Britain women’s hockey teams, The Derby festival and football clubs. In South Africa it has supported the Kutlwanong mathematics and science programme since 2005 and helped fund Wethinkcode, a software-engineering college established to address youth unemployment. The group’s South African transformation agenda has included empowerment financing, support for black entrepreneurs and efforts to increase workplace representativity. In 2025, the group announced that it had received a South African electricity-trading licence, enabling it to source renewable power and trade electricity through the national transmission and distribution system.
