Overview

IO Interactive A/S is a Copenhagen-based Danish video-game developer and publisher. The company was established on 16 September 1998 as a joint venture between the seven-person team behind Reto-Moto and Danish film company Nordisk Film. Its early work combined action-game design with technical experimentation, most notably the proprietary Glacier engine and an early use of real-time ragdoll and inverse-kinematics techniques for character deaths. Those foundations supported Hitman: Codename 47, released in 2000, which introduced the professional assassin Agent 47 and established the studio’s long-term focus on systemic, replayable environments, disguise mechanics and player-directed stealth. IO Interactive expanded rapidly after the original Hitman and released Hitman 2: Silent Assassin in 2002 for PC and consoles. The sequel substantially broadened the audience for the series and helped establish IOI as one of Europe’s notable developers. During the early 2000s the studio also worked outside Hitman, including Freedom Fighters, a third-person action game published by Electronic Arts. Eidos Interactive acquired IO Interactive in 2004 for cash and stock, with additional performance-linked consideration. Under Eidos, the studio produced Hitman: Contracts and Hitman: Blood Money, while also creating the Kane & Lynch series. In 2009, Eidos was acquired by Square Enix and IO Interactive became part of the resulting Square Enix Europe structure. The company experimented with broader audiences through Mini Ninjas and developed Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, but the commercial and strategic center of gravity returned to Hitman. Hitman: Absolution launched in 2012 with a more linear and mainstream presentation than earlier entries. Following internal reflection and a major 2013 workforce reduction, Square Enix directed IO Interactive to concentrate on new Hitman projects. The 2016 Hitman adopted an episodic release model and introduced a persistent, content-rich platform approach that later became the foundation of the World of Assassination trilogy. In 2017, Square Enix withdrew funding and sought a buyer for the studio. IO Interactive completed a management buyout in June, becoming independent and retaining the intellectual property for Hitman and Freedom Fighters. The transaction did not include Kane & Lynch or Mini Ninjas. Independence enabled IOI to receive the profits from Hitman directly and to pursue publishing and distribution relationships, including a partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for Hitman 2 and related editions. IO Interactive released Hitman 2 in 2018 and Hitman 3 in 2021. Hitman 3 concluded the planned World of Assassination trilogy while also serving as a platform for content from the preceding games. The studio subsequently broadened its portfolio again. It announced Project 007, an original James Bond game developed under licence, and Project Fantasy, a new fantasy-oriented intellectual property. IO Interactive operates subsidiary studios in Malmö, Barcelona and Brighton and had more than 500 employees as of June 2025. Its stated business identity combines premium game development, publishing, proprietary technology and ownership of enduring entertainment properties.

History

IO Interactive began in Copenhagen in 1998 when the seven founders of Reto-Moto joined with Nordisk Film to create a new game-development venture. The team initially considered a massively multiplayer fantasy project, but shifted toward a more manageable action game. Development eventually produced Hitman: Codename 47, whose Glacier technology and physics-driven interactions helped distinguish it from conventional shooters. Eidos Interactive signed the game for publication, and its release in 2000 introduced Agent 47. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin followed in 2002 and was released across PC and consoles. Its stronger critical reception and broader platform reach enabled IOI to grow. The studio then diversified with Freedom Fighters and, after Eidos acquired it in 2004, released Hitman: Contracts and Hitman: Blood Money. It also developed Kane & Lynch: Dead Men and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, demonstrating an interest in action games beyond stealth. Several original founders later revived Reto-Moto, while IOI continued under changing management. Eidos became part of Square Enix in 2009. During this period IOI released Mini Ninjas, pursued the mobile and cloud-gaming initiative associated with Hapti.co, and developed Hitman: Absolution. A substantial 2013 redundancy programme led Square Enix to refocus the studio almost entirely on Hitman. The 2016 game used episodic distribution and a continuing content model, later expanded through Hitman 2 and Hitman 3. Square Enix’s 2017 decision to cease funding created the defining corporate turning point in IOI’s modern history. The studio cut jobs, negotiated a management buyout and became independent in June. It regained Hitman and Freedom Fighters, while previous owners retained other properties. After independence, IOI continued Hitman development, opened studios in Malmö, Barcelona and Brighton, and entered a distribution relationship with Warner Bros. for Hitman 2 and related releases. Hitman 3 arrived in 2021 as the trilogy’s conclusion. The company then began developing Project 007 and Project Fantasy, extending its business beyond Agent 47 while maintaining a focus on authored, systemic game worlds.

Products and positioning

A premium, independent European game studio focused on systemic stealth, replayable sandbox design, cinematic action and multi-platform publishing. Its strongest brand association is the Hitman series and the long-term development of Agent 47 as an internationally recognized game character.

  • Stealth action game franchise · 2000

    Hitman

IO Interactive’s signature franchise follows Agent 47, a professional assassin operating in open-ended locations. The series emphasizes disguises, observation, environmental interaction, multiple routes and player-created solutions rather than a single prescribed combat path. Later entries developed the concept into a persistent content platform, with missions and locations supporting repeated experimentation.

  • Third-person action game franchise · 2007

    Kane & Lynch

Kane & Lynch is a darker action franchise centered on two unstable antiheroes. Unlike Hitman’s solitary stealth structure, its games emphasize linear progression, gunplay and cooperative or ensemble scenarios. IO Interactive developed Kane & Lynch: Dead Men and Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days before the intellectual property remained outside the studio after its 2017 separation from Square Enix.

  • Third-person action game · 2003

    Freedom Fighters

Freedom Fighters is an IO Interactive-developed third-person action game published by Electronic Arts. Set during an alternate-history invasion of the United States, it combines direct combat with squad recruitment and command. The property returned to IO Interactive in the 2017 management buyout, although no new installment is identified in the supplied material.

  • Family-oriented action-adventure game · 2009

    Mini Ninjas

Mini Ninjas was designed to broaden IO Interactive’s audience beyond the mature themes associated with Hitman and Kane & Lynch. It presents a lighter action-adventure experience with accessible characters and a family-friendly tone. The intellectual property was not included in the studio’s 2017 management buyout.

  • Licensed action game

    Project 007

Project 007 is IO Interactive’s announced James Bond game. It is intended as an original Bond story rather than a direct adaptation of a specific film, and represents the studio’s expansion into a major licensed entertainment property while retaining its interest in espionage and sophisticated mission design.

  • Original fantasy game

    Project Fantasy

Project Fantasy is an announced original intellectual property that broadens IO Interactive’s portfolio beyond assassination and espionage. Details about its mechanics, setting, release timing and commercial model were not specified in the supplied reference material.
