Overview

i+R Industrial and Commercial Construction AG is a Swiss construction company specialising in industrial and commercial building, municipal building projects, hotel construction, renovation and refurbishment, and residential construction. It operates as part of the i+R Gruppe, a construction, real-estate and construction-machinery group whose origins lie in carpentry and timber construction and which today describes itself as one of the leading construction and real-estate companies in the Lake Constance region. The company's core service is the general-contractor (Generalunternehmer) model. In this role i+R takes responsibility for executing and coordinating the entire construction work package on behalf of the client, rather than the client awarding and managing individual trades. i+R coordinates subcontractors, construction sequences, schedules, quality and interfaces, and delivers the building turnkey. The company positions this model as particularly suitable for industrial and commercial buildings where many technical, functional and scheduling requirements converge — production processes, storage and logistics areas, office space, building services, fire protection, energy supply and future expandability. Within the wider i+R Gruppe, the Swiss industrial and commercial construction arm sits alongside timber construction, real-estate development, construction-machinery trading (including Takeuchi excavators and Martin excavator attachments), equipment rental and digital platforms. The group traces its history back more than a hundred years to a carpentry business, and has been restructured since 2012 into a holding structure with independent operating subsidiaries under the management of Reinhard Schertler, who succeeded his father Günter Schertler. Recent project activity illustrates the company's positioning: i+R acts as general contractor for the Bücklepark residential quarter in Konstanz on the former Siemens site for WOBAK Konstanz, as total contractor for the timber-hybrid extension of the Allgäu-Gymnasium in Kempten, and as general contractor for the roughly EUR 40 million "Quartier am Schlosspark" residential project in Donaueschingen for naturenergie. The company also works on office and service buildings such as the JTI service building in Eschen and the EnDes office building in Winterthur, and has received awards for timber construction, including two distinctions at the first Austrian State Prize for Timber Construction for the Hohenems town hall and the Hittisau schools.

History

The i+R Gruppe traces its origins to a carpentry business founded more than a hundred years ago, from which it developed into a construction, real-estate and construction-machinery group. The group describes its origin as lying in timber construction, with expertise that today extends far beyond it. A decisive turning point came in 2012, when Reinhard Schertler entered as managing partner, succeeding his father Günter Schertler. This began a restructuring of the company into a new holding structure: the individual business areas were converted into independent, operating subsidiaries. In 2013 the group opened its LEED-certified corporate headquarters on the new company premises on Johann-Schertler-Straße in Lauterach, Austria. Günter Schertler died in 2014. The group expanded its machinery and equipment business in the following years. In 2015 it acquired Martin GmbH in Braz, Austria, a specialist in excavator attachments such as excavator buckets and quick-couplers that had long been a business partner of Huppenkothen. In the same year it founded the technology startup SUNCAR, whose first "purring" excavator was developed and immediately awarded the Swiss Solar Prize. In 2018 construction began on the new Martin GmbH corporate headquarters in Ludesch, and in 2019 the group acquired Lorenz Lift GmbH in Feldkirch, a rental business for aerial work platforms and construction machinery, and expanded the Huppenkothen operations at its Lauterach headquarters. Also in 2019, the group founded Digando, a digital platform for construction machinery rental, and introduced a new brand identity — a umbrella brand connecting the brand world of the i+R Gruppe. In 2023 a new production hall with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for timber element construction was added to i+R Holzbau following the conversion and extension of 2019. A further Martin production site was established in Straß in Styria, with excavator bucket production starting there in autumn 2025. Within this group, i+R Industrial and Commercial Construction AG represents the Swiss industrial and commercial construction business. It works as a general contractor and total contractor on industrial, commercial, municipal, hotel, renovation and residential projects. Its project portfolio in the Lake Constance region and beyond includes the Bücklepark residential quarter in Konstanz on the former Siemens site for WOBAK Konstanz, the timber-hybrid extension of the Allgäu-Gymnasium in Kempten, the "Quartier am Schlosspark" residential project in Donaueschingen for naturenergie, the JTI service building in Eschen and the EnDes office building in Winterthur. The group's timber-construction expertise is reflected in awards such as two distinctions at the first Austrian State Prize for Timber Construction for the Hohenems town hall and the Hittisau schools.
