History

Irinjalakuda Municipality was constituted on 8 February 1936, during the period of princely rule in Cochin (Kochi) state, before India's independence. It was established as a municipality to provide local governance for the town of Irinjalakuda and its surrounding areas in what is now Thrissur district, Kerala. At the time of its formation, the municipality covered an area of 11.24 square kilometres and comprised the villages of Manavalassery and Irinjalakuda. According to the 2011 census, the population within this area was 28,741. Following the 2011 census, the Porathissery Grama Panchayat was merged into the municipality, expanding its jurisdiction to 33.57 square kilometres. This merger was part of a broader trend in Kerala to consolidate urban local bodies and improve administrative efficiency. The municipality is bordered by several grama panchayats: Karalam, Muriyad, Velookkara, Poomangalam, and Cherpu. Over the decades, Irinjalakuda has grown into an important urban centre in Thrissur district, known for its cultural and educational institutions. The Koodalmanikyam Temple, an ancient and renowned temple dedicated to Bharata, is located within the municipality and attracts pilgrims and tourists. The Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam is a centre for Kathakali and other traditional arts, named after the famous Malayalam poet Unnayi Warrier. Christ College, Irinjalakuda, is a prominent educational institution affiliated with the University of Calicut. The town has also been the birthplace or residence of numerous notable individuals in the fields of arts, science, and public life. The municipality continues to function as the primary civic body for the town, delivering essential services such as water supply, sanitation, waste management, and maintenance of local infrastructure. It operates under the administrative framework of the Kerala Municipality Act and is overseen by the Department of Local Self-Government, Government of Kerala.
