Overview
Irom Group Co., Ltd. (株式会社アイロムグループ) is a Japanese healthcare services and drug-development support group headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Founded in April 1997, the company grew from a site management organization (SMO) business into a diversified group spanning SMO services, contract research (CRO) and advanced contract research, development and manufacturing (CRDMO), advanced medical treatment including gene and cell therapy, and medical support services. Its brand promise is 'For a future without anxiety' (憂いなき未来のために。). The group's core business is supporting clinical trials. Through its SMO operations it places and manages clinical research coordinators at medical institutions, helping hospitals run sponsored trials; through its CRO and CRDMO operations it provides research, development and manufacturing services aimed at difficult and rare diseases. The advanced medical treatment arm, historically associated with the subsidiary ID Pharma (formerly DNAVEC), works on gene therapy and regenerative medicine, including vaccine and genome-editing technologies. A medical support business provides healthcare-related property and living infrastructure services. Irom Group has expanded through acquisitions and reorganizations, including the acquisition of Australian clinical research company CMAX Clinical Research in 2017 and the integration of Esic Co., Ltd. in the same year to strengthen its SMO network. The company moved to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market in April 2022, and announced the delisting of its shares in May 2025. As of March 2026 it reported 1,269 consolidated employees including temporary staff, and its fiscal year ends in March. The group has also pursued digital transformation of clinical trials, including partnerships with NTT Data and Emnes, and has published a long-term vision, 'FOR THE FUTURE – VISION TO 2035'.
History
Irom Group traces its origins to April 1997, when the company was founded in Japan. It initially built its business around supporting clinical trials at medical institutions, an activity known in Japan as site management organization (SMO) services. Over the 2000s the company expanded into contract research organization (CRO) work and pharmaceutical distribution, and in October 2006 it reorganized into a holding company structure: Irom Co., Ltd. changed its name to Irom Holdings Co., Ltd. (later Irom Group), the SMO business was succeeded to a newly established subsidiary Irom Co., Ltd. through a company split, and the medical support business was succeeded to Irom Medic (later Irom Property Management). In January 2007 the group established Aicross Co., Ltd. to enter the CRO business in the Kanto region, and in August 2007 it acquired Atsuku Corporation to expand its CRO base. During the late 2000s and early 2010s it also operated drugstore and dispensing businesses, which it divested in December 2012 to Leaf and Apostatus under the Weeds Holdings group. In September 2011 it acquired all shares of Healthy Clinical Research Pty Ltd in Australia to conduct clinical trials there, and in October 2010 it absorbed Irom Business Development. A major strategic shift toward advanced medicine came in January 2014, when the group acquired DNAVEC Corporation via a share exchange to enter gene drug discovery and cell/regenerative medicine. In April 2015 DNAVEC changed its name to ID Pharma Co., Ltd., clarifying its ambition to become a pharmaceutical company engaged in research, development, manufacturing, approvals and sales in regenerative medicine and gene therapy. In July 2015 Irom Holdings changed its name to Irom Group Co., Ltd., and several subsidiaries were renamed. In September 2016 Irom Property Management was renamed Irom PM. In June 2017 the group made Esic Co., Ltd. a consolidated subsidiary through a share exchange to expand SMO share and strengthen its clinical trial network, and in August 2017 it acquired all shares of CMAX Clinical Research Pty Ltd in Australia, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. In July 2019 Aicross changed its name to CMAX JAPAN, and in October 2019 Aicross Japan changed its name to Aicross. In July 2020 Esic changed its name to Irom EC, and in July 2021 ICE changed its name to ICELLEAP. In April 2022 the company moved to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. In July 2023 Irom EC changed its name to Irom IR and Irom CS changed its name to Irom OM. More recently the group has emphasized digital transformation of clinical trials and advanced modalities. In April 2025 it announced a partnership with Evive Biotech on the innovative G-CSF drug Ryzneuta®, and in May 2025 it announced the delisting of its shares. In August 2025 it published its long-term vision 'FOR THE FUTURE – VISION TO 2035'. In November 2025 it announced collaboration with NTT Data to expand the cloud version of the clinical trial support system PhambieLINQ nationwide, and in January 2026 it formed a strategic partnership with Emnes for clinical trial DX. In April 2026 it announced development of a precise genome editing method using InCDC technology, and in August 2026 it announced publication of a paper on the immune response and challenge trial results of a novel nasal COVID-19 vaccine.
