Overview

Iron Horse Vineyards is a small, independent, estate, family-owned winery in the cool, foggy Green Valley of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California. It was founded in 1976 by Barry and Audrey Sterling, who bought the 300-acre property after first seeing it in February 1976. The winery handcrafts estate-bottled still and sparkling wines, including méthode champenoise sparkling wines, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs, and its sparkling wines have been served at the White House for seven consecutive presidential administrations. Now in its second generation of family leadership, Iron Horse remains guided by the values and vision established at its founding.

History

Iron Horse Vineyards was founded in 1976 by Barry and Audrey Sterling, who first saw the property in the pouring rain in February 1976. Driving down Ross Station Road, they crested a knoll and viewed 300 acres of gentle rolling hills; described as incurable romantics with extraordinary vision and a dash of French vineyard knowledge, they bought the property in just two weeks. The estate vineyard is also the family home, with three generations living on the fog-kissed 300-acre reserve. Now in its second generation of family leadership, Iron Horse continues to be guided by the values and vision established at its founding. The winery has spent five decades crafting méthode champenoise sparkling wines from its own vineyards, shaped by the cool, fog-influenced climate a few miles from the Pacific Ocean, and its sparkling wines have been served at the White House for seven consecutive presidential administrations, beginning with the historic Reagan–Gorbachev Summit Meetings. Barry and Audrey named the vineyards and winery after a 19th-century railroad stop.
