Overview
Isetatsu is a long-established publisher and retailer of Edo chiyogami (decorative paper) and omocha-e (toy prints), founded in 1864 in Kanda Motoiwai-cho (present-day Iwamoto-cho). The company has continued its traditional craft through generations, surviving disasters and reviving lost woodblocks. It operates the Yanaka main store, which is open year-round.
History
Isetatsu was founded in 1864 by the first Tatsugoro, who opened a shop for nishiki-e and fan production in Horie-cho, Nihonbashi, after serving an apprenticeship. The second generation moved the shop to Kanda Benkeibashi in 1870 and expanded sales to foreign settlements in Yokohama and Europe. The third generation continued the business but lost many woodblocks in the Great Kanto Earthquake; he revived about a thousand chiyogami woodblocks. The fourth generation moved the shop to Yanaka in 1942 and gradually restored woodblocks after World War II. Currently, the fifth generation, four siblings, maintain the business.
