Islamrat für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland

The Islamrat für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland describes itself as an Islamic religious community that offers Muslims religious services and helps them lead lives according to Islamic rules and precepts. It says it creates and strengthens structures for Muslim life in Germany and takes on societal responsibility in numerous areas. Its members include mosque communities, religious associations, educational institutions and other institutions covering different areas of Muslim life. The organization states that several Islamic religious communities joined together in 1986 to form the Islamrat für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

According to the organization's own account, the first Islamic religious communities in Germany were founded in the 1970s in the form of mosque communities. This arose from the wish and need of Muslims to have spaces for daily prayers and other acts of worship, the transmission of religious teaching, or encounters among community members. The goal was and is to be able to live one's own religion freely and self-determinedly as a Muslim in Germany. Alongside realizing Islamic faith at the local level, such as holding Friday prayers in mosque communities, it quickly became clear that a leading and authoritative body was also necessary at regional and national level. The organization and conduct of pilgrimage journeys or pastoral care, for example, could not be offered at local level, or only with difficulty. Therefore, in 1986 several Islamic religious communities joined together to form the 'Islamrat für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland'.
