Overview

Istanbul Airport (IATA: IST) is the main international airport serving Istanbul, Turkey. It opened to commercial passenger traffic in 2018 and was developed as a replacement for the aging Atatürk Airport, which had reached capacity limits. The airport is located on the European side of Istanbul, near the Black Sea coast in the Arnavutköy district, and is operated by İGA Havalimanı İşletmesi A.Ş. (İGA), a consortium that was awarded the build-operate-transfer contract by the Turkish government. The facility is designed to be one of the largest airports in the world, with a multi-phase expansion plan that ultimately targets a capacity of up to 200 million passengers per year. It serves as the primary hub for Turkish Airlines, the country's flag carrier, and has become a major connecting point for international travel between Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The airport features a large single terminal building, extensive retail and dining options, and modern passenger amenities. Its opening marked a significant milestone in Turkey's aviation strategy, aiming to position Istanbul as a global aviation hub. The airport has won several awards for its architecture and passenger experience. As a state-owned infrastructure asset operated under a public-private partnership, Istanbul Airport is a key economic driver for the region and a prominent brand in global aviation.

History

Istanbul Airport was conceived in the early 2010s as a solution to the capacity constraints of Atatürk Airport, which was handling well beyond its designed limits. The Turkish government launched a tender for the construction and operation of a new airport under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model. The contract was awarded to the İGA consortium, comprising five Turkish construction companies: Cengiz, Kolin, Limak, Mapa, and Kalyon. Construction began in 2015 and proceeded in phases. The first phase, including the main terminal and two runways, was inaugurated on October 29, 2018, a date symbolizing Turkish Republic Day. Commercial passenger flights began on April 6, 2019, when the airport fully took over from Atatürk Airport for scheduled passenger services. The airport's design by a consortium of architectural firms, including Grimshaw, Nordic Office of Architecture, and Haptic, features a distinctive terminal with a large central hall and extensive natural light. The airport has continued to expand, with additional phases planned to increase capacity. It has become a key hub for Turkish Airlines, which has expanded its network significantly since the airport's opening. The airport has also faced challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which drastically reduced passenger traffic in 2020, but it has since recovered strongly. In 2022, Istanbul Airport was ranked among the busiest airports in Europe and the world by passenger numbers. The airport has received numerous awards, including recognition for its architecture and customer service. It remains a symbol of Turkey's ambition to be a major player in global aviation.
