Overview

Istituto Geografico Visceglia is a historic Italian cartographic publishing house founded in 1929 by Prof. Vincenzo Visceglia. For over 90 years it has produced cartographic publications that have been used by town planners, engineers, municipal authorities, and industrial and tourist organizations. The company is based in Rome and is known for its extensive archive of original hand-drawn cartographic bases, a library, and a collection of rare and antique maps. Visceglia's product range includes traditional cartography such as tourist maps, marketing maps, and wall maps for schools, as well as innovative digital cartography, statistical cartography software, and thematic geographic maps. The company also reproduces ancient geographic maps and creates chalk and wooden globes, along with geographic-themed interior decoration items. In addition, Visceglia operates as a publisher, editing and distributing volumes on geography, tourism, advertising, history, art history, and archaeology, including high-quality scientific publications. The institute's first publication in 1930 was the Guida toponomastica di Roma, a planimetric map of the city divided into panels with street numbers. During the 1960s, updated plans of provincial capitals were published, forming the Atlante urbanistico d'Italia. The large Planimetria di Roma at 1:10,000 scale, Vincenzo Visceglia's last work, was displayed in metro and railway stations and airports. After Vincenzo Visceglia's death in Rome in 1971, the institute continued under the direction of his daughter Rosangela Visceglia, who led the company for 25 years. Today it is directed by Laura Ottaviani, granddaughter of Vincenzo Visceglia. The company remains active, selling maps and cartographic products through its online store, with a focus on quality and updating. Its website features popular products such as political color maps of the world, sepia maps, and physical maps, with customer reviews indicating satisfaction with product quality and service.

History

The Istituto Geografico Visceglia was founded in 1929 by Prof. Vincenzo Visceglia. In 1930, the institute produced its first publication: the Guida toponomastica di Roma, a planimetric map of the city divided into panels with street numbers indicated. During the 1960s, updated plans of provincial capitals were published, and their collection formed the Atlante urbanistico d'Italia. The large Planimetria di Roma at a scale of 1:10,000, Vincenzo Visceglia's last work, was displayed in metro and railway stations and airports. After Vincenzo Visceglia's death in Rome in 1971, the institute continued under the direction of his daughter Rosangela Visceglia, initially his close collaborator and later, for 25 years, head of the company. Today it is directed by Laura Ottaviani, granddaughter of Vincenzo Visceglia. After 90 years, the company supplies traditional cartography but is also able to develop other products such as statistical cartography software and cartography for marketing. The company also created a Geo-Art department in 1942 and participated in the Torino-VI Urban Congress in October 1956.
