Overview

The Istituto Universitario Salesiano Torino Rebaudengo (IUSTO) is a private university institute based in the Rebaudengo district of Turin, Italy. It is aggregated to the Faculty of Education Sciences of the Università Pontificia Salesiana (Pontifical Salesian University, UPS) in Rome, which gives its academic programmes canonical recognition within the Catholic higher education system. IUSTO describes its mission as academic formation, scientific research across several disciplines of the human sciences, and continuing education for young people and adults, with the aim of improving personal quality of life and strengthening social ties in its territory. Its teaching and practice draw on methods validated by psychology and pedagogy, in a continuous updating of Don Bosco's 'preventive system'. The institute traces its roots to a long Salesian tradition of university-level formation in Turin and Piedmont going back to 1936, and to the Pontifical Salesian Athenaeum erected in Turin in 1940. The modern legal entity, the Associazione civile SSF Rebaudengo, was founded on 22 June 2000 on the initiative of the Salesians of Piedmont and registered on 29 August 2000; it established the Scuola Superiore di Formazione di Torino. After affiliation to the UPS Faculty of Education Sciences was granted by decree of 29 August 2005, the school launched, from the 2006/2007 academic year, a Baccalaureate in 'Sciences and Techniques of Communication Psychology'. From 2014/2015 the institution adopted the name IUSTO. Aggregation to the UPS was concluded on 15 April 2015, allowing it to award the academic degree of Licenza (licentiate) as well as the Baccalaureate. IUSTO's academic offer has grown steadily: Baccalaureates and Licentiates in Developmental and Educational Psychology and in Clinical and Community Psychology (2015), a Baccalaureate in Education Sciences (Professional Social Educator track) and a Licentiate in Work, Organisational and Communication Psychology (2016), a Licentiate in Psychology Applied to Digital Innovation and a Baccalaureate in Education Sciences (Educator of Educational Services for Infancy track) in 2021/2022, and a Baccalaureate in Public Relations and Organisational Communication in 2022/2023. Since 2013 the institute has been part of the IUS (Salesian Institutions of Higher Education), an international network with 95 locations in 22 countries across five continents. It is registered in the MIUR National Research Register and, since 2017, is recognised as a qualified provider of teacher-training courses under Ministerial Directive 170/2016, and is authorised to accept the Carta del Docente. From 19 June 2026 it becomes 'IUSTO - Impresa Sociale' (Istituto Universitario Salesiano Torino Rebaudengo - Impresa Sociale).

History

IUSTO's history is rooted in a long tradition of Salesian university-level formation in Turin and Piedmont dating back to 1936. On 3 May 1940 the Sacred Congregation issued the decree erecting the Pontifical Salesian Athenaeum (PAS) in Turin. In 1948 the Salesian Orientation Centre (CSO) was established at the Istituto Rebaudengo, later becoming a section of the PAS Higher Institute of Pedagogy, approved by decree of 2 July 1956 of the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education. In 1958 the School and Vocational Guidance Service was organised. After the PAS moved to Rome, courses in Psychology for graduates and upper-secondary diploma holders began in Turin in 1966, approved by Ministerial Decree of 7 July 1966. With the launch of the Degree in Psychology at the University of Turin in 1989, the Rebaudengo Centre redefined its objectives and areas of action, focusing on training, guidance and psychotherapeutic support activities. On 22 June 2000, on the initiative of the Salesians of Piedmont, the Associazione civile SSF Rebaudengo was founded, registered on 29 August 2000 under no. 7449 at the Turin Revenue Agency (it later obtained recognition of private legal personality on 13 July 2017 by Managerial Determination no. 175, published in the Official Bulletin of the Piedmont Region no. 32 of 10 August 2017). The association established the Scuola Superiore di Formazione di Torino. Procedures for affiliation to the Faculty of Education Sciences of the Pontifical Salesian University were then initiated, with the aim of giving academic curricular form to some training initiatives the school had already undertaken. After affiliation to the Pontifical Salesian University of Rome was granted by the Congregatio de Institutione Catholica by decree of 29 August 2005, the Associazione SSF Rebaudengo — whose majority of members are Salesian entities — promoted, from the 2006/2007 academic year, the Scuola Superiore di Formazione (later renamed 'IUSTO' from 2014/2015, indicating the Istituto Universitario Salesiano di Torino): the Baccalaureate course in 'Sciences and Techniques of Communication Psychology' was thus launched. In 2007 the association also obtained regional accreditation for Training (Cert. no. 827/001 of 04/04/2007) and for Guidance (Cert. no. 800/001 of 04/04/2007). With the renewal of affiliation to the Pontifical Salesian University by decree of the Congregatio de Institutione Catholica of 6 August 2010, the Baccalaureate course in Psychology was renewed with updated content and the new name 'Psychology of Communication'. After several years of activity of the Scuola Superiore di Formazione, with favourable results in terms of enrolments, diplomas and graduates placed in ecclesial and social settings, and with the need to allow students to obtain the academic degree of Licenza there as well, the aggregation process was initiated and concluded favourably on 15 April 2015 by decree of the Congregatio de Institutione Catholica. At the same time, curricula for the Baccalaureate in Developmental and Educational Psychology and for the Licentiate in Developmental and Educational Psychology and in Clinical and Community Psychology were launched; the following year, curricula for the Baccalaureate in Education Sciences (Professional Social Educator track) and the Licentiate in Work, Organisational and Communication Psychology were also launched. The academic offer was further enriched in 2021/2022 with the launch of the Licentiate in Psychology Applied to Digital Innovation and the Baccalaureate in Education Sciences (Educator of Educational Services for Infancy track); the last curriculum, the Baccalaureate in Public Relations and Organisational Communication, was activated in 2022/2023. Since 2013 the institute has been part of the IUS (Salesian Institutions of Higher Education), an international network with 95 locations worldwide, present in 22 countries across five continents. IUSTO is registered in the MIUR National Research Register; since 2017 it has been recognised as a qualified entity for the delivery of teacher-training courses under Ministerial Directive 170/2016 (art. 1), and is authorised to use the Carta del Docente. From 19 June 2026 it becomes 'IUSTO - Impresa Sociale', otherwise known as 'Istituto Universitario Salesiano Torino Rebaudengo - Impresa Sociale'.
