Overview

Isuzu Advanced Engineering Center, Ltd. (株式会社いすゞ中央研究所) is the research and advanced-development subsidiary of Isuzu Motors Limited, the Japanese commercial-vehicle manufacturer. Headquartered in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, inside the Isuzu Motors Fujisawa Plant, the company was established on 1 February 1990 when part of Isuzu Motors' development division was spun off into a separate entity. Its purpose was to give researchers the freedom to pursue ideas for the technologies and functions that future commercial vehicles would require, without being bound by the immediate constraints of product development. The company describes itself as the "brain trust" of Isuzu, with more than 70% of its roughly 213 employees working as researchers. Its mission is to create the technologies that support "transport" (運ぶ) and thereby realize a richer future society; its vision is to become a research institute that autonomously provides new value. Isuzu Motors Limited owns 100% of the shares, and the company works in close coordination with its parent, including labor conditions maintained at approximately the same level as Isuzu Motors. Research is organized around four pillars: innovation creation, carbon neutrality, smart mobility, and value co-creation. Within these, the institute works on commercial-vehicle electrification, autonomous driving, logistics-related solutions, internal-combustion engine efficiency, and energy. It also looks beyond near-term productization, forecasting what logistics will need ten, twenty or thirty years ahead. The company collaborates with research institutions, universities and companies in Japan and overseas, and it files patents and publishes academic papers, transferring research results to Isuzu Motors. Its representative director and president is Toshio Ichimasa.

History

Isuzu Advanced Engineering Center, Ltd. was established on 1 February 1990, when part of Isuzu Motors' development division was spun off into a separate company. The move was intended to promote free thinking about the technologies and functions that future commercial vehicles would need, giving researchers room to explore ideas that might not fit within the immediate product-development cycle. The company has operated for more than 30 years as Isuzu's research organization, contributing to Japanese logistics through research and development of commercial-vehicle technology. From its base in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, within the Isuzu Motors Fujisawa Plant, the institute has served as the technology source of the Isuzu Group. Its role is to research the future technologies for vehicles that Isuzu Motors will release — that is, to propose new technologies ahead of product development and to chart a path toward realizing them. It works with researchers at research institutions and universities around the world. Over time the research focus has evolved with the industry. The company has addressed the automotive industry's CASE transition (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric), conducting a wide range of research across technologies and services in each domain. It has also maintained work on internal-combustion engine efficiency, including recent published research on long-stroke, high-compression-ratio diesel engines for heavy-duty vehicles, the effects of spray interference on diesel combustion, and generative-design optimization of diesel engine gear structures. Its research is organized into four areas: innovation creation, carbon neutrality, smart mobility, and value co-creation. As of the mid-2020s the institute describes itself as a core organization responsible for creating future value within the Isuzu Group. Under its mission of creating technologies that support "transport" and realizing a richer future society, and its vision of becoming a research institute that autonomously provides new value, it has set out to move beyond the extension of existing technologies. It aims to explore unknown areas, acquire new technologies, and cultivate "trial technologies" into future core technologies. Its stated research pillars include technologies that continue to support a working society, technologies that extend human potential, and technologies that turn environmental burden into value. A Technology Innovation Center forms the core of its research structure. The company continues to file patents and publish papers, transferring research results to Isuzu Motors, and maintains close coordination with its parent, which owns 100% of its shares.
