Overview

Italgen is an Italian company active in the production and distribution of electricity from 100% renewable sources. Formally established in 2001 as a spin-off of the energy division of Italcementi, its industrial roots date back to the early 20th century, when engineer Cesare Pesenti began developing hydroelectric power plants to serve the Pesenti cement business in Alzano Lombardo. Since 2016 Italgen has been a portfolio company of Italmobiliare S.p.A., the Milan-listed investment holding controlled by the Pesenti family, which owns 100% of Italgen. The company operates a diversified renewable platform. It manages 28 hydroelectric derivation concessions (including 5 large derivations) in Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto; 4 photovoltaic plants in Lombardy, Apulia and Marche; and owns a transmission network of 300 km of power lines between the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia, configured as SEEESEU-D. Italgen is also a minority partner of a major Italian group in the management of wind farms in Kavarna, Bulgaria, totaling 18 MW. Its installed capacity is approximately 103 MWp, and it serves around 133,000 typical households. In 2024 its energy mix was 100% renewable, compared with a national average of 51.8%, and it avoided 90,926 tonnes of CO2. Revenue was €63 million with 66 employees as of 31 December 2025. Italgen positions itself as "the green heart of energy," emphasizing sustainability, environmental care and support for the ecological transition toward a low-carbon economy. It has been a participant in the United Nations Global Compact since 2023 and adopted the legal status of società benefit (benefit corporation) in 2024. Its portfolio includes historically and architecturally significant hydroelectric plants, such as the Vaprio d'Adda plant between the Martesana canal and the Adda river, designed by Piero Portaluppi and operational since 1951, and the Dezzo plant in the Scalve Valley, rebuilt in 1927 after the Gleno disaster. The company also carries out territorial works, including the artificial Cassiglio lake basin, and continues revamping and digitalizing its hydroelectric derivations. Its plants are periodically opened to the public for special initiatives.

History

Italgen's industrial history begins in the early 20th century, when engineer Cesare Pesenti launched a development plan for electricity-generating plants to serve the Ditta Pesenti cement business in Alzano Lombardo. This early hydroelectric activity formed the basis of what would later become Italgen. The company was formally established in 2001 as a spin-off of the energy division of Italcementi. In 2016 Italgen became a portfolio company of Italmobiliare S.p.A., the Milan-listed investment holding controlled by the Pesenti family, which today owns 100% of the company. In 2023 Italgen joined the United Nations Global Compact, and in 2024 it adopted the legal status of società benefit (benefit corporation). Over the decades, the company built and acquired a portfolio of hydroelectric plants, some of which are architecturally and historically significant, such as the Vaprio d'Adda plant (designed by Piero Portaluppi, operational since 1951) and the Dezzo plant in the Scalve Valley (rebuilt in 1927 after the Gleno disaster). It has also expanded into solar photovoltaic and, through a minority partnership, wind power in Bulgaria. The company continues to invest in revamping, digitalization and territorial works, including the artificial Cassiglio lake basin.
