Overview
Itelyum is an Italian industrial group operating in the circular economy, specialised in the regeneration of used lubricating oils, the purification of chemical and pharmaceutical waste streams into high-purity solvents, and integrated environmental services for industry and public bodies. The group was formally created on 26 March 2019 from the combination of Viscolube, Bitolea and their subsidiaries, but its industrial roots date back to 1963, when Viscolube was founded in Pieve Fissiraga and began regenerating used oils. Today Itelyum describes itself as a national leader and an internationally recognised player in the management and valorisation of industrial waste, with over 60 years of industrial history built on circular-economy principles. The group is organised into three strategic business units. Regeneration transforms collected used lubricating oil into new regenerated lubricant bases with quality characteristics similar to oils produced directly from crude oil processing; the company states that each tonne of regenerated oil saves a net 40% of CO2 compared with first-refining production. Purification recovers products from chemical and pharmaceutical industry waste streams, returning them to their original markets or to other industrial sectors, and also produces and trades high-purity solvents and pharmaceutical starting materials. Environmental services cover the integrated management of industrial waste, including collection, transport, pre-treatment, consulting and brokerage, reducing the spatial and temporal distance between waste generation and reuse. Itelyum operates through a large family of Italian companies. Itelyum Regeneration S.p.A. is based in Pieve Fissiraga (Lodi) and also operates a regeneration plant in Ceccano (Frosinone). Itelyum Purification S.p.A. is based in Landriano (Pavia) and has a Rho (Milan) site for drumming and logistics; Im.Tra.S. S.r.l. handles waste and chemical product transport. The environmental services perimeter includes Aeco, Agrid, Area, Carbo-Nafta Ecologia, Castiglia, Centro Risorse, De Luca Servizi Ambiente, Fer.Ol.Met., Idroclean and Innovazione Chimica, among others, covering waste brokerage, water treatment, sludge management, storage and recovery of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, and accredited laboratory analysis. The group has grown substantially through acquisition. In March 2020 it acquired 100% of Idroclean, a reference company in Lombardy and northern Italy for industrial water treatment and purification, and 80% of Carbonafta, an Umbrian industrial waste management company. In July 2020 it acquired 100% of Intereco srl, active in environmental services. In July 2021 it took over Castiglia of Massafra (Taranto), a historic company in sustainable management of sludge from water treatment and high-value services for large industry. In August 2021 Stirling Square Capital Partners' fourth fund announced an investment in the Itelyum Group in partnership with the German fund DBAG. Itelyum positions itself as an enabler of sustainability and a driver of ecological transition. Its business model is based on the circular economy, investing in technology and innovation to support decarbonisation of the supply chains in which it operates and to create shared value for stakeholders. The company reports an 84% circularity index, 355 kt of net CO2 emissions avoided per year, and 2,000,000 tonnes per year of waste managed. It adheres to the UN Global Compact and has adopted organisational, management and control models under Italian Legislative Decree 231/01, an ethical code, a whistleblowing system and a supervisory body across group companies.
History
The history of the Itelyum group begins in 1963 in Pieve Fissiraga, where Viscolube was founded and, for the first time, started the regeneration of used oils. Viscolube joined the Consorzio Nazionale per la Raccolta, Gestione e Trattamento Oli Minerali Usati (CONOU) from its establishment in 1982. In order to increase quality and reduce environmental impact, the company progressively integrated within itself all the subjects making up the industrial chain of collection and regeneration of used oils. In 2001 Viscolube acquired and renewed the regeneration plant in Ceccano; during this period it became the leading used-oil regeneration company in Italy. In 2013 Viscolube began diversifying its activities by acquiring operating companies in Italy in the collection and management of special (hazardous and non-hazardous) waste, creating a dedicated division now called Itelyum Ambiente. Itelyum was presented in Milan on 26 March 2019. The group of Italian companies operating in the circular economy, created by the fund Stirling Square, integrated 16 companies with the two main companies operating in residue regeneration: Viscolube of Lodi, dealing with lubricant recycling, and Bitolea of Pavia, dealing with purification of used solvents. In March 2020 Itelyum acquired 100% of the Idroclean Group, a reference company in Lombardy and northern Italy for the treatment and purification of industrial waters, and 80% of Carbonafta, an Umbrian company active in industrial waste management. In July 2020 Itelyum acquired 100% of Intereco srl, a company operating in environmental services and a partner of businesses and public bodies. In July 2021 Itelyum took over Castiglia of Massafra (Taranto), a historic company operating in the sustainable management of sludge from water treatment and purification and in high-value-added services for large industry, including management and maintenance of water networks and aqueducts, demolitions, remediation, upgrading and revamping of industrial plants, and port environmental services. In August 2021 the fourth fund of Stirling Square Capital Partners announced its investment, in partnership with the German fund DBAG, in the Itelyum Group. The group is divided into three strategic business units. Regeneration of used mineral oils is the high-technology production process that transforms collected used lubricating oil into new regenerated lubricant bases; this final product, used in the industrial and automotive sectors, has quality characteristics similar to oils produced directly from crude oil processing. In terms of environmental impact, for every tonne of regenerated oil there is a net saving of 40% of CO2 compared with emissions from the production cycle of first-refining oils. Purification of chemical waste streams and used solvents and production of high-purity solvents recovers products from the waste of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, destining them to the same markets of origin or to other industrial sectors; products from distillation of virgin petroleum fractions and synthesis starting materials integrate the offering to customers, from whom significant quantities of waste are collected for valorisation. Environmental services provide integrated management of industrial waste, guaranteeing collection, transport and pre-treatment, as well as consulting and brokerage, so as to reduce the spatial and temporal distances between waste production and reuse destination. The group companies include, under Regeneration solutions, Itelyum Regeneration S.p.A. in Pieve Fissiraga (Lodi) as headquarters for used oil regeneration and oily emulsion treatment, and Ceccano (Frosinone) for used oil regeneration. Under Purification solutions, Itelyum Purification S.p.A. in Landriano (Pavia) handles regeneration and recovery of used solvents, production and trading of pure solvents, and synthesis of pharmaceutical starting materials, with Rho (Milan) for drumming and logistics; Im.Tra.S. S.r.l. in Landriano (Pavia) provides transport of waste and chemical products. Under environmental solutions, Aeco S.r.l. (Bologna) handles waste brokerage; Agrid S.r.l. (Casirate d'Adda, Bergamo) sells products and by-products derived from recycling industrial and food scraps; Area S.r.l. (Gradisca di Sedegliano, Udine) treats industrial waters, with administrative headquarters in Motta di Livenza (Treviso); Carbo-Nafta Ecologia S.r.l. (Perugia) brokers, collects, transports and stores hazardous and non-hazardous waste; Castiglia S.r.l. (Massafra, Taranto) sustainably manages waste and sludge from water treatment and purification; Centro Risorse S.r.l. (Motta di Livenza, Treviso) stores, treats, recovers and valorises hazardous and non-hazardous waste; De Luca Servizi Ambiente S.r.l. (Vittorio Veneto, Treviso) collects, transports and stores solid and liquid waste, with Verona treating oily emulsions; Fer.Ol.Met. S.r.l.
