Overview

Ito Yokado Funabashi is a large general merchandise store (GMS) operated by Ito-Yokado Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Seven & i Holdings, located in the Funabashi Twin Building in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. The store opened on October 1, 1981, as a core tenant of the Funabashi Station North Exit Second District urban redevelopment project. The building consists of an East Wing (two basement floors and six above-ground floors) and a West Wing (two basement floors and seven above-ground floors), connected by pedestrian decks and promenades, and is directly linked to JR Funabashi Station. At the time of opening, Ito-Yokado divided the East Wing as a women's building and the West Wing as a men's building, and the store was considered one of the company's premier locations, second only to the Tsudanuma store in sales floor area. It featured amenities such as a children's library, housing consultation corner, and childcare consultation corner. The store's trade area was conceived as a semicircle centered on the north side of the Sobu Line, extending east to Higashi-Funabashi and north to Kamagaya, overlapping with the Tsudanuma store's western trade area and the Kamagaya store's trade area. The store offers a wide range of products including food, fashion, household goods, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, and hosts numerous specialty tenants such as Loft, ABC-Mart, Aoyama Tailor, GU, Muji, and Daiso. It also provides services such as online supermarket, mobile supermarket, and various customer assistance services. The store operates from 10:00 to 21:00 daily, with some exceptions. It is a key retail destination in the Funabashi area.

History

Ito Yokado Funabashi opened on October 1, 1981, as the core tenant of the Funabashi Twin Building, a redevelopment project at the north exit of Funabashi Station on the former Japanese National Railways (now JR East) Sobu Line. The building was developed by the Funabashi Station North Exit Second District Urban Redevelopment Association. The twin-building complex consists of an East Wing (two basement floors, six above-ground floors) and a West Wing (two basement floors, seven above-ground floors), connected by pedestrian decks and promenades, and directly linked to Funabashi Station to ease traffic congestion and improve safety. At opening, Ito-Yokado used the East Wing as a women's building and the West Wing as a men's building. The store was one of the company's largest by sales floor area, second only to the Tsudanuma store (which closed in September 2024), and was considered a flagship. It included a children's library, housing consultation corner, and childcare consultation corner. The trade area was planned as a semicircle centered on the north side of the Sobu Line, extending east to Higashi-Funabashi and north to Kamagaya, overlapping with the Tsudanuma store's western trade area and the Kamagaya store's trade area. On February 22, 2002, Uniqlo opened in the store. In 2018, several new tenants opened: on November 2, Loft, ABC-Mart, Muji, and Daiso; on November 30, Aoyama Tailor. On February 22, 2019, the food court "SHIP TERRACE" opened on the first floor of the West Wing. On January 7, 2021, Uniqlo closed, and on April 28, 2021, GU opened in the former Uniqlo space. On March 1, 2022, the closing time was changed to 21:00. The store continues to operate as a major retail destination in the Funabashi area.
