Overview
ITU-TRNC Education Research Campuses (Turkish: İTÜ-KKTC Eğitim-Araştırma Yerleşkeleri), commonly abbreviated as ITU-TRNC or İTÜ-KKTC, are the education and research campuses established by Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) in the Gazimağusa (Famagusta) region of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). The initiative reflects cooperation between Turkey and Northern Cyprus and aims to raise the quality and capacity of higher education in the TRNC. The campuses began teaching in the 2011–2012 academic year, with the Foreign Languages Preparatory School entering operation in that year. The language of instruction is English. The project was formalized through a Framework Protocol signed on 19 January 2008 between Turkey and the TRNC, which was approved by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on 17 April 2008 through Law No. 5756. On 16 March 2009, the TRNC Assembly adopted Law No. 38/2009, the İTÜ-KKTC Education-Research Campuses (Establishment, Duty, Working and Inspection) Law, which was published in the Official Gazette. A subsequent decision by the Turkish Council of Ministers on 15 December 2009 approved the Framework Protocol, and the decision was published in the Official Gazette on 5 January 2010. ITU-TRNC offers undergraduate programs selected with attention to geographical location and regional and global needs, particularly serving the maritime sector. The academic units include Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Economics and Finance, Architecture, Interior Architecture, Maritime Business Administration, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and Marine Transportation and Management Engineering. Preparatory school education and undergraduate studies are conducted at the ITU-TRNC Gazimağusa Campus. Academic staff are assigned from Istanbul Technical University under Law No. 38/2009. The campuses operate under the umbrella of Istanbul Technical University, a state university in Turkey with a 250-year history, as highlighted on the official website. The official website provides contact details including the address Namık Kemal Mah. Fazıl Polat Paşa Bulvarı, Gazimağusa-KKTC, and phone number +90 392 630 5000. The institution continues to develop infrastructure for basic and engineering sciences courses and for additional undergraduate programs planned for future years.
History
The establishment of ITU-TRNC Education Research Campuses stems from a cooperation project between Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), with Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) at its center. The project aims to increase the higher education quality capacity and student numbers in the TRNC. On 19 January 2008, a Framework Protocol concerning the establishment of Education-Research Campuses (İTÜ-KKTC) by Istanbul Technical University in the TRNC was signed. On 17 April 2008, the Turkish Grand National Assembly adopted Law No. 5756 approving the Framework Protocol. On 16 March 2009, at the 44th session of the TRNC Assembly, Law No. 38/2009, the İstanbul Technical University İTÜ-KKTC Education-Research Campuses (Establishment, Duty, Working and Inspection) Law, was adopted and promulgated by the President of the TRNC through publication in the Official Gazette. On 5 January 2010, the approval of the Framework Protocol, which had been signed on 19 January 2009 and found appropriate for approval by Law No. 5756 dated 17/4/2008, was decided by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Turkey on 15 December 2009, based on Article 3 of Law No. 244 dated 31/5/1963, upon the letter of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey dated 1/12/2009 and numbered HUMŞ/1574. The decision was published in the Official Gazette. In the 2011-2012 academic year, the Foreign Languages Preparatory School became operational.
