Iyoshi Cola

Iyoshi Cola is a craft cola specialist maker with a workshop in Shimo-Ochiai, Tokyo. It was founded by 'Cola Kobayashi', the grandson of the Japanese herbal medicine craftsman Ryotaro Ito, who inherited his grandfather's techniques and workshop. The brand began mobile sales in July 2018 at a farmers market in Aoyama, Tokyo, using a mobile sales vehicle called 'Kawasemi-go'.

The workshop of Iyoshi Cola stands in Shimo-Ochiai, along the Kanda River and a row of cherry trees. The location was originally the workshop of the Japanese herbal medicine craftsman Ryotaro Ito, called 'Iyoshi Yakko'. Ito apprenticed at a Japanese herbal medicine workshop in Soto-Kanda around the age of 12 and opened his own workshop bearing his name in Shimo-Ochiai in 1954. Iyoshi Cola's representative, 'Cola Kobayashi', was Ito's grandson. A cola enthusiast who traveled around drinking colas worldwide, Kobayashi wanted to make an ultimate, moving cola and repeatedly experimented with cola making. At age 21 he found a 'cola recipe written over 100 years ago' on the internet and began making cola out of curiosity. Two and a half years after starting, he returned home to sort through his grandfather's belongings; looking at the materials and tools left in the workshop, he realized he could use them for cola making. Changing the heating method and process markedly improved the flavor and taste of the cola. He built a mobile sales vehicle called 'Kawasemi-go' and in July 2018 began mobile sales at a farmers market in Aoyama, Tokyo. The trade name 'Iyoshi Cola' was taken from his grandfather's workshop name, inheriting its craftsmanship. The logo motif is the kingfisher (kawasemi), and he named his cola 'craft cola'.
