Overview

Izvestiya Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva (Proceedings of the Russian Geographical Society) is the oldest scientific geographical journal in Russia and the CIS, published without interruption since 1865. It is issued by the Russian Geographical Society (RGO), with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Limnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences among its founders. The journal covers theoretical and applied problems of modern geography and related sciences, with emphasis on spatial organization of the economy, regional development, rational use of natural resources, and conservation of natural diversity. It also addresses methodology of geographical research and problems of geographical education. Over its history the journal has appeared under several names reflecting the political transformations of the country: Izvestiya Imperatorskogo Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva (1865), Izvestiya Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva (1918), Izvestiya Gosudarstvennogo Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva (1926), Izvestiya Gosudarstvennogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva (1930), Izvestiya Vsesoyuznogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva (1940), and since 1992 the current title. The journal is published by the Nauka publishing house (Saint Petersburg) and is indexed in Scopus during several periods (1978–1979, 1981, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1992–1993, 1995–1997), though Scopus coverage has since been discontinued. Its editorial board includes prominent Russian geographers and academicians, with Nikolay Kasimov and Vladimir Razumovsky as editors-in-chief. Publication in the journal is a preferential right of members of the Russian Geographical Society. The journal's website is izv.rgo.ru, and submissions are handled through that site.

History

The journal's predecessor was founded in 1848 as Geograficheskie Izvestiya (Geographical News), a supplement to the Zapiski (Notes) of the Russian Geographical Society, which had been published since 1846. In 1851 Geograficheskie Izvestiya was renamed Vestnik Geograficheskogo Obshchestva (Herald of the Geographical Society), which appeared six times a year until 1860. In 1861 the Vestnik merged with the Zapiski into a single publication, Zapiski Imperatorskogo Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva. The journal itself began in 1865 as Izvestiya Imperatorskogo Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva. It has been published continuously since then, never suspending or ceasing publication. The title changed with the political history of the country: in 1918 it became Izvestiya Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva; in 1926 Izvestiya Gosudarstvennogo Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva; in 1930 Izvestiya Gosudarstvennogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva; in 1940 Izvestiya Vsesoyuznogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva; and in 1992 it returned to Izvestiya Russkogo Geograficheskogo Obshchestva. The journal was indexed in Scopus during 1978–1979, 1981, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1992–1993, and 1995–1997; Scopus coverage has since been discontinued. Today the journal publishes scientific articles across all fields of geographical research, with publication being a preferential right of members of the Russian Geographical Society. The publisher is the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the issuing organization is the Nauka publishing and bookselling firm in Saint Petersburg. Submissions are made through the journal's website, izv.rgo.ru.
