Overview

Waldkircher Orgelbau Jäger & Brommer is a German organ-building workshop based in Waldkirch im Breisgau. It was founded on 15 July 1988 by the organ builders Heinz Jäger and Wolfgang Brommer, who had trained and worked in various well-known organ workshops before establishing their own business. The company sees itself as continuing the tradition of Waldkirch organ building, which was founded in 1799 by Matthias Martin and enjoyed a world reputation from the early 19th century into the 1920s. The workshop builds new organs, restores historic instruments, and provides tuning, maintenance, and repair services. It also has over 25 years of experience in organ electrics, including maintenance, restoration, modernisation, and new construction of electrical organ systems. The company is internationally active, with instruments in Europe, the USA, Japan, Korea, and China. Its Opus 1 was a new organ for the pilgrimage church 'Berghauser Kapelle' near Ebringen. For smaller congregations and rooms, Jäger & Brommer developed the ÖK-Orgel-Konzept, an economical modular system in the manner of a positive organ, with a one-manual basic module that can be expanded with pedal and accompanying manual modules, or an Oberwerk manual; alternatively, a spinet or digital piano can be installed instead of the second manual. The workshop has received several awards. In 2007 it was the first craft business to be awarded the German Foreign Trade Prize (Deutscher Außenwirtschaftspreis), and in the same year it received the Großer Preis des Mittelstands. In 2009 it received the Bildungsoscar for outstanding achievements in training, and was named a Member of Excellence by the German Musicinstruments Certification e.V. In 2013 it was named Handwerksunternehmen des Jahres (Craft Business of the Year). Since 1996, Jäger & Brommer has published the Waldkircher Orgel-Zeitung, which appears in connection with the international Waldkircher Orgelfest held every three years. The company is a co-founder of the Waldkircher Orgelstiftung and the Sulzmann-Archiv, a document collection of the monument conservator and organ expert Bernd Sulzmann. Today the workshop employs 16 organ builders, master organ builders, and apprentices. The two founders, Heinz Jäger and Wolfgang Brommer, are both master organ builders and certified restorers in organ building, and both serve on the master examination committee. The team also includes office staff, organ builders, a master carpenter, and a freelance intonation specialist. The company trains apprentices and seeks candidates interested in a good training in a workshop with over 28 years of training experience, ideally with a one-year woodworking school, and willing to work on installations outside Germany, for example in China.

History

Waldkircher Orgelbau Jäger & Brommer was founded on 15 July 1988 by the organ builders Heinz Jäger and Wolfgang Brommer. Wolfgang Brommer is the son of the teacher and art historian Hermann Brommer. The two founders had completed their training, several journeyman years, and work in various well-known organ-building workshops before their paths crossed. Their skill and shared passion for classical organ building formed the basis for their joint will to build high-quality organ instruments. The company sees itself as continuing the tradition of Waldkirch organ building, which was founded in 1799 by Matthias Martin and enjoyed a world reputation from the beginning of the 19th century into the 1920s. As Opus 1, Jäger & Brommer built a new organ for the pilgrimage church 'Berghauser Kapelle' near Ebringen. Further work in southern Germany followed. They also carried out initial restoration work on flute clocks and mechanical musical instruments. The quality of their restorations is recognised by museums. The Waldkirch organ builders are also internationally active, with instruments in Europe, the USA, Japan, Korea, and China. Jäger & Brommer developed the ÖK-Orgel-Konzept for smaller church congregations and smaller rooms. This is an economical modular system in the manner of a positive organ, containing a one-manual basic module that can be expanded via pedal extension and accompanying manual modules as well as an Oberwerk manual. Alternatively, a spinet or digital piano can be installed instead of the second manual. Jäger & Brommer are co-founders of the Waldkircher Orgelstiftung and the Sulzmann-Archiv, the document collection of the monument conservator and organ expert for church organs of the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation, Bernd Sulzmann (1940–1999). In 2007, the 'Meisterwerkstatt für Orgelbau Jäger & Brommer' was the first craft business to be awarded the 'Deutscher Außenwirtschaftspreis'. Further awards in 2007 were the 'Großer Preis des Mittelstands'. In 2009, the company received the 'Bildungsoscar' in recognition of outstanding achievements in the training area and for special training successes. Also in 2009, the business was awarded as a Member of Excellence of the German Musicinstruments Certification e. V. In 2013, it was named 'Handwerksunternehmen des Jahres'. Since 1996, Jäger & Brommer has been the publisher of the Waldkircher Orgel-Zeitung, which appears in connection with the international Waldkircher Orgelfest held every three years. Today the workshop employs 16 organ builders, master organ builders, and apprentices. The number of employees has grown steadily with the organs to be built. In the field of restoration, valuable instruments have been restored and saved for future generations. As certified restorers in organ building, the master organ builders have the professional qualification for the restoration of mechanical and pneumatic organ works. The well-trained and highly motivated employees ensure the highest quality in all areas.
