Overview
The J. Heinr. Kramer Gruppe (J.H.K. Gruppe) is a German industrial services group headquartered in Bremerhaven. Founded in 1901 by Johann Heinrich Kramer as a copper smithy, it has grown into a mid-sized, family-owned industrial and service group now led by the fourth generation. The group's core business areas include industrial piping, special machinery, steel, tank and apparatus construction, electrical installation, and associated engineering. It also operates in scaffolding, surface technology, and measurement and control technology for mineral oil handling. The group comprises six independently operating companies at four locations in Germany — Bremerhaven, Essen, Großenkneten-Ahlhorn, and Hamburg — and employs around 350 people. It serves clients primarily in the DACH region and worldwide. The group is held under J. Heinr. Kramer Holding GmbH & Co. KG. Notable projects include the construction of the Neumayer-Station III polar research station in collaboration with Kaefer between 2007 and 2009. The company remains a private, family-controlled enterprise.
History
The J. Heinr. Kramer Gruppe was founded in 1901 by Johann Heinrich Kramer as a copper smithy in Bremerhaven. At that time, the local fishing steamer fleet was adopting refrigeration technology powered by steam, and copper was the material of choice for such systems. In 1929, J. Heinrich Kramer, who had trained as a copper smith and became a master copper smith, took over the company. During the 1930s, the business developed into a mid-sized operation. After the Second World War, the company diversified into electrical engineering and steel construction. In 1982, Ingo Kramer joined the group as managing director and led it as managing partner from 1986 to 2018; he also served as President of the Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA) from 2013 to 2020. Today, the plant engineering group, with a long family tradition, is led by the fourth generation, Julius Kramer and Georg Kürfgen. Between 2007 and 2009, the J.H.K. Group, together with the company Kaefer, built the Neumayer-Station III polar research station for the Alfred Wegener Institute. The consortium benefited from the J.H.K. Group's experience from the construction of the predecessor station, Neumayer-Station II. As of December 2023, the group consists of six independently operating companies at four locations in Germany, active primarily in the DACH region and worldwide.
