Overview
JAŊDE Editorial is a Catalan-language publishing cooperative founded between Barcelona, Vic and Mataró in Catalonia, Spain. It describes itself as a fiction and non-fiction editorial cooperative with a social vocation: to generate a quality space for literature that its founders felt was missing. The name «jaŋde» comes from Fula (Pulaar), the language of the Fulani people, an ethnic group present in several countries of the southern Sahel in West Africa with more than 40 million speakers today; «jaŋde» can be translated into Catalan as both «reading» and «teaching». The press was founded by Diana Rahmouni Audenis, daughter of a Syrian father and a Catalan mother, and Aissata M’ballo Diao, born in Catalonia to Senegalese parents. Both saw that their identities were not represented in Catalan literature, and decided to create a publisher that would publish the books they would have liked to read as children, oriented toward quality Catalan literature with racialized and migrant voices. The project was also conceived as a key space against the invalidation of racialized voices by the far right and racism. To that end, the publisher also translates internationally recognized works into Catalan, such as La meva carta més llarga by Mariama Bâ, a classic of contemporary African literature, and No és tan radical by Mikaela Loach, an anti-racist and intersectional work on climate change and climate justice. In 2024 the cooperative ran a crowdfunding campaign on Goteo to cover its initial needs: professional design for the image of its three collections (Taali, Nazra, Cittàgazze) and cover designs with illustrations and photographs by migrant or racialized professionals; sustainable printing with minimal environmental impact and a plan to offset the publisher's ecological footprint; dignified advances for authors publishing in the first stage and quality proofreading; investment in communication and outreach events; initial administrative costs; and the salaries of the two working partners initially on 10-hour weekly contracts. It began publishing in February 2025 with the collections Taali (narrative, poetry and theatre), Cittàgazze (fantasy and science fiction) and Nazra (non-fiction). Its first book was «Mares migrants», a poetry collection by Fàtima Saheb honoring mothers who leave their countries of origin in search of a better life for their children. JAŊDE Editorial was also the first to publish the work of acclaimed English writer Zadie Smith in Catalan.
History
JAŊDE Editorial is a Catalan-language publishing cooperative born between Barcelona, Vic and Mataró with a social vocation of «generating a quality space for literature» featuring racialized and migrant voices in Catalan. The word «jaŋde» belongs to Fula or Pulaar, the language of the Fulani people, an ethnic group present in several countries of the southern Sahel in West Africa with more than 40 million speakers today. «Jaŋde» can be translated into Catalan as «reading» and also «teaching». The publisher was founded by Diana Rahmouni Audenis, daughter of a Syrian father and a Catalan mother, and Aissata M’ballo Diao, born in Catalonia to Senegalese parents. Both saw that their identities were not represented in Catalan literature, and therefore decided to create a publisher that would publish the books they would have liked to read as children, oriented toward quality Catalan literature with racialized and migrant voices. At the same time, the project was also meant to serve as a key space against the invalidation of racialized voices by the far right and racism. For this reason the publisher also translates internationally recognized works into Catalan, such as La meva carta més llarga by Mariama Bâ, a classic of contemporary African literature and a nearly autobiographical account of the author as a woman in Senegal during the transition from colonialism to modernism, and No és tan radical by Mikaela Loach, an anti-racist and intersectional work on climate change and climate justice. In 2024 they launched a crowdfunding campaign with Goteo, with which they wanted to cover the first needs of starting the new publisher, including: commissioning a professional design for the image of the three collections Taali, Nazra and Cittàgazze, as well as cover designs with illustrations and photographs by migrant or racialized professionals for each book; covering the costs of print production by printing sustainably and respectfully toward the environment, generating the minimum possible environmental impact, and also developing a plan to offset the publisher's ecological footprint; offering a dignified advance to the authors publishing during the first stage and being able to commission quality corrections; investing in communication and holding outreach events by paying the collaborations that helped disseminate the publishing project; paying initial administrative costs; and supporting the expense of the salaries of the two working partners initially with a 10-hour weekly contract. They would begin publishing in February 2025, initially with the collections Taali (narrative, poetry and theatre), Cittàgazze (fantasy and science fiction) and Nazra (non-fiction). The first book they published was titled «Mares migrants», a poetry collection by Fàtima Saheb that honors mothers who leave their countries of origin in search of a better life for their children. JAŊDE Editorial was also the first to publish in Catalan the work of Zadie Smith, the acclaimed English writer.
