Overview
JA Nara-ken (奈良県農業協同組合, Nara Prefecture Agricultural Cooperative), commonly branded as JAならけん, is the agricultural cooperative that covers the whole of Nara Prefecture in Japan. Its head office is in Ōmorichō, Nara City, inside the Nara Prefectural Agricultural Cooperative Hall. It was created on 1 April 1999 through the merger of all 42 agricultural cooperatives then operating in Nara Prefecture, and it is notable as the first single prefecture-wide JA in Japan, rather than a prefectural central union or economic federation of multiple cooperatives. The cooperative serves member farmers with guidance and technical support, sales and marketing of agricultural produce, and procurement of production materials, while also operating financial services (JA Bank), mutual insurance (JA Kyōsai), and funeral services. Its retail arm includes the farmers' market chain Mahoroba Kitchen (まほろばキッチン), with stores such as the Kashihara branch and the JR Nara Station branch opened in July 2018. It publishes a public relations magazine, Mahoroba (まほろば), and runs community events such as the JA Nara-ken Summer Festa. As a cooperative, JA Nara-ken is owned by its members rather than shareholders and is not listed on a stock exchange. It is part of the broader JA Group, the national network of Japan Agricultural Cooperatives, and works with bodies such as the National Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA Zenchu) and JA Kyōsai. Its activities span food and agriculture, regional and daily-life services, and cooperative organizational work, and it has issued an SDGs declaration committing to sustainable food production, sustainable food systems, reduced environmental burden, and vibrant regional communities. In recent years the cooperative has continued to modernize its operations, including banking system changes and digitalization of financial services, while maintaining its direct-sales outlets and member-focused programs for youth (Seishōnen-bu), women's associations, and pensioners' clubs.
History
JA Nara-ken was established on 1 April 1999, when all 42 agricultural cooperatives in Nara Prefecture merged through a new incorporation (新設合併) to form the Nara Prefecture Agricultural Cooperative. This made it the first single prefecture-wide agricultural cooperative in Japan, distinct from the more common structure of a prefectural central union (中央会) or economic federation (経済連) composed of multiple member cooperatives. On 1 October 1999, JA Nara-ken took over the comprehensive operations of the Nara Prefectural Credit Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA奈良県信連) and the Nara Prefectural Economic Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA奈良県経済連), consolidating credit and economic functions under the single cooperative. In May 2005, the cooperative began operating the national JA credit online system (JASTEM). In July 2008, it marked its 10th anniversary. In July 2018, it opened the agricultural produce retail store Mahoroba Kitchen JR Nara Station branch (まほろばキッチンJR奈良駅前店), expanding its direct-sales retail presence. In recent years, JA Nara-ken has continued to modernize its financial and administrative operations, including system renewals for JA Bank, changes to financial counter hours, and measures against special fraud such as ATM usage limit changes. It has also issued an SDGs declaration, aligning its business and activities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and maintains active youth (Seishōnen-bu), women's, and pensioners' organizations.
