Overview
Jagello 2000 is a Czech registered association (zapsaný spolek, formerly an občanské sdružení) that works in the field of public diplomacy on security policy, with a particular focus on the Czech Republic's membership in NATO. According to its own description, it is the main Czech civil-society body active in public diplomacy on security policy and on Czech membership in the North Atlantic Alliance. Its stated aim is to raise awareness among both the general public and professional audiences about domestic and foreign security policy and about NATO. The association was founded in connection with the Czech Republic's accession to NATO in 1999. Because Poland also joined the Alliance that year, the founders saw a unique opportunity to build stronger Czech-Polish relations, and promoting the alliance between the two countries was one of the association's main goals in its early years. The founders came from Silesia and northern Moravia, which is why Ostrava was chosen as the association's seat. Over the years its focus evolved toward security policy and the Euro-Atlantic area more broadly. Jagello 2000's membership includes prominent diplomats, politicians and public figures from the Czech Republic and abroad. Its best-known project is NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days (Dny NATO v Ostravě & Dny Vzdušných sil AČR), held regularly since 2001. What began as a small event at Černá louka in Ostrava, visited by a few thousand people, moved over the years to Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport and grew into the largest security showcase in Europe. Visitors can see dynamic and static displays by soldiers, firefighters, police, customs officers, prison service, municipal police and many foreign participants. Since 2014 the event has featured a "Special Partner Nation" concept, presenting one country in greater depth each year. Other flagship activities include the national conference "Naše bezpečnost není samozřejmost" (Our Security Is Not a Given), held annually since 2014 and bringing together leading Czech political figures and security experts, with a prominent foreign guest each year; the news portal natoaktual.cz; the NATO Information Centre in Prague, which focuses on high-school students and teachers; the Czech and Slovak Transatlantic Award, given annually in cooperation with the Slovak organization GLOBSEC; and the biennial open day at Čáslav air base, organized with the 21st Tactical Air Force Base. The association also ran the Aliante international student competition between 2001 and 2015 and has said it plans to revive the concept. Jagello 2000 operates as a non-profit association rather than a commercial company, but it functions as a distinct organizational brand in Czech security public diplomacy, with its own projects, events, media outlet and awards. It is based in Ostrava and active mainly in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, with a Euro-Atlantic orientation.
History
Jagello 2000 is a Czech registered association (zapsaný spolek, formerly an občanské sdružení) active in security policy, above all in the Czech Republic's membership in NATO. Its stated goal is to raise awareness among the general and professional public about domestic and foreign security policy and about the North Atlantic Alliance. One of the main reasons for the association's founding was the Czech Republic's accession to NATO in 1999. Because Poland also joined the Alliance that year, the founders treated it as a unique opportunity to build stronger Czech-Polish relations, and promoting the alliance between the two countries was one of the association's main goals in its early years. The founders came from Silesia and northern Moravia, and Ostrava was therefore chosen as the association's seat. Over the years the association's focus evolved, and its current orientation relates primarily to security policy and the Euro-Atlantic area. The association's members include prominent diplomats, politicians and public figures from the Czech Republic and abroad. The most significant project of the association is NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days. The event has been held regularly since 2001. Originally it was a small event at Černá louka in Ostrava, visited by a few thousand people. Over the years it moved to Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport and became the largest security showcase in Europe. Visitors can each year see dynamic and static displays by soldiers, firefighters, police, customs officers, prison service, municipal police and a range of foreign participants. Each year the organizers try to offer something interesting and exceptional. As part of expanding the programme, since 2014 visitors can encounter the concept of a "Special Partner Nation", in which one country is presented on a broader scale each year, making it possible to see, for example, ground equipment from more distant states. In addition to the weekend programme itself, the event includes discussions, film screenings, seminars, school talks and other accompanying programmes. Since 2014 a national conference, "Naše bezpečnost není samozřejmost" (Our Security Is Not a Given), has been held annually, bringing together leading political representatives and foremost security experts from the Czech Republic. In their contributions and debates, speakers assess past periods and set out plans for further steps in ensuring the defence and security of the Czech Republic. Traditional speakers at the conference include the President of the Czech Republic, the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Ministers, ministers, representatives of the Czech Army, diplomats and experts on security and defence policy. Each year a prominent foreign guest is included among the speakers; in the past these have included former NATO Secretary General George Robertson and Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski. The news portal natoaktual.cz deals with informing the public about security issues. It provides news, analyses, commentaries and summary information about the North Atlantic Alliance and about security and defence policy in the world. The NATO Information Centre (IC o NATO) is based in Prague and focuses on conveying information about security issues. It focuses primarily on secondary-school students and teachers, but lectures, excursions, seminars, study trips and more can also be arranged for other Czech and foreign institutions or individuals. Among the centre's main focuses are current NATO issues and military, security and international questions. In cooperation with the Slovak organization GLOBSEC, the association annually awards the Czech and Slovak Transatlantic Award during a gala dinner on the occasion of NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days. It is awarded to honour personalities who have significantly contributed to freedom and democracy in Central Europe. Laureates of the award include Madeleine Albright, General Petr Pavel, Andrej Kiska and others. Once every two years, Jagello 2000 organizes, in cooperation with the 21st Tactical Air Force Base Čáslav, an open day at Čáslav air base. There the public can learn more about the activities and equipment of the base itself and of other units of the Czech Army. Visitors can also see dynamic and static presentations of historical and aerobatic aircraft, demonstrations by components of the Integrated Rescue System and more. Aliante was one of the first events organized by Jagello 2000. Between 2001 and 2015, secondary-school students could take part in an international competition whose basic focus was to motivate students to take an interest in international relations and security policy. Competitors had to combine knowledge, judgement and physical fitness, but the key to victory was the ability to cooperate in an international team (the highest number of participating countries was 14). Winners could look forward to trips to one of the participating countries, where they visited ministries, military bases, non-profit organizations and other places connected with security. Jagello 2000 plans to revive the concept of the competition.
