Overview
The Japan Society for Graphic Science (JSGS; 日本図学会) is a Japanese academic society established in 1967 as the Japan Society for Graphic Research (日本図学研究会) and renamed to its current title in 1969. It brings together experts from mechanical engineering, information engineering, architecture, fine arts, design, and related fields who share a common interest in figures, shapes, and their representation. The society defines graphic science broadly, encompassing not only descriptive geometry but also engineering drawing, computer graphics, CAD, and the educational methods that cultivate spatial ability and creative recognition of shapes. The society's activities include an annual national conference, biannual graphic science education research meetings, a digital modeling research group, and international conferences. It publishes the quarterly journal Journal of Graphic Science of Japan (図学研究) and organizes awards such as the JSGS Award and the JSGS Paper Award. It is registered with the Science Council of Japan and has been actively involved in the International Conference on Geometry and Graphics (ICGG) since its first edition in Vancouver in 1978. JSGS members played a central role in founding the International Society for Geometry and Graphics (ISGG) in 1990 and contribute to its English-language journal, Journal for Geometry and Graphics. The society is headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and maintains regional branches in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chubu, Kansai, and Kyushu. It also engages in educational outreach, including a national high school digital modeling contest. Through its conferences, publications, and international collaborations, JSGS serves as a forum for interdisciplinary exchange on geometry, graphics, and design education.
History
The Japan Society for Graphic Science was founded in 1967 as the Japan Society for Graphic Research (日本図学研究会) by educators and researchers who sought to create a national network for graphic science education and research. In 1969, the organization was renamed the Japan Society for Graphic Science (日本図学会). From its inception, the society adopted a broad definition of graphic science, encompassing not only descriptive geometry but also engineering drawing, graphics, and all fields related to figures and their applications. This inclusive vision attracted members from mechanical engineering, information engineering, architecture, fine arts, design, and even clothing science. In its early years, the society conducted nationwide surveys on the state of graphic science education at universities, junior colleges, and technical colleges. Annual graphic science education research meetings began and continue to be held, often incorporating workshops. The society also launched its quarterly journal, Journal of Graphic Science of Japan (図学研究), which remains a central publication for members. Internationally, JSGS has been active since the first International Conference on Geometry and Graphics (ICGG) in Vancouver in 1978. Since 1988, ICGG has been held biennially in various countries. In 1990, JSGS members played a key role in establishing the International Society for Geometry and Graphics (ISGG), and the society has participated as a supporting organization of ICGG since 1996. Over 300 Japanese researchers have presented at ICGG. JSGS also engages with the Asian Conference on Graphic Science (AFGS) and other regional meetings. Domestically, the society operates through regional branches in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Chubu, Kansai, and Kyushu, which hold regular meetings, lectures, and symposia. It also organizes the Digital Modeling Research Group and, more recently, a national high school digital modeling contest. The society is registered with the Science Council of Japan. Its headquarters is located in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
