Overview

Jaroszówka horse stud (Polish: Stadnina Koni Jaroszówka; French: Haras de Jaroszówka) is a Thoroughbred breeding farm in Lower Silesia, south-western Poland. It lies in the Czarna Woda river valley, near the Czarna Woda Valley Landscape Park, about 5 km from Chojnów, 18 km from Legnica and 25 km from Lubin, among meadows and wooded pastures. The stud was established in 1969 as part of the breeding centre of the Chojnów State Stud, and from the outset it raised Thoroughbred racehorses. On 1 September 1993 a new economic entity, Jaroszówka Stud Farm Ltd, was created with its seat in Goliszów; its main task remained the breeding of Thoroughbred racehorses, with small-scale breeding of other breeds as well. Over this period horses bred at Jaroszówka won more than 1,000 races. The stud also hosts sporting competitions, races and shows, and an equestrian club, the Horse Sports Centre Riding Club in Jaroszówka, was registered on 30 April 2002. Jaroszówka is known not only in Poland but internationally: its horses have been part of equestrian teams of European countries such as the Netherlands. The stud also pioneered vaulting in Poland, and its vaulting section won medals at world and European championships in the 1980s and 1990s. Today the farm continues to breed Thoroughbreds and half-bred sport horses and remains a reference point for Polish horse breeding.

History

The Jaroszówka horse stud was created in 1969 within the breeding centre of the Chojnów State Stud, in the Czarna Woda valley in Lower Silesia, south-western Poland. From the beginning it raised Thoroughbred horses, and the location near Chojnów, Legnica and Lubin placed it within a long-established Polish horse-breeding region. For more than two decades it operated as part of the state stud system. On 1 September 1993, following the political and economic changes in Poland, a new economic entity was created: Jaroszówka Stud Farm Ltd, with its seat in Goliszów. The main task of the stud remained the breeding of Thoroughbred racehorses, while other breeds were also bred on a small scale. Competitions, races and shows were organised at the site. During this period horses bred at Jaroszówka won more than 1,000 races. An equestrian club, the Horse Sports Centre Riding Club in Jaroszówka, was registered on 30 April 2002. The riding club itself was created in 2000 following a change in the ownership relations of the stud, and it continued training activities that had been carried out in the local environment for many years. Equestrian sport at Jaroszówka always functioned in close relation with the stud, using its facilities, equipment and horses. The main discipline practised at the club is eventing (concours complet), and the club has also been involved in dressage and trotting training. From the late 1980s and early 1990s, rider-horse pairs trained there won medals at world championships. Jaroszówka has hosted the Polish Eventing Championship six times. The stud was also the first centre in Poland to practise vaulting. In the 1980s the coach of the acrobatic section, Hanna Kaczyńska, in cooperation with Andrzej Sałacki, prepared competitors in less than six months to take part in the World Vaulting Championships in Bulle, Switzerland (1986). The performances of the Jaroszówka vaulting section brought further successes in later years, including two bronze medals at the World Championships in Ebreichsdorf (Austria, 1988) and Heilbronn (Germany, 1992), and a bronze medal at the European Championships in The Hague (Netherlands, 1993). The section's successes helped popularise vaulting in the country. Jaroszówka breeds Thoroughbred and half-bred horses intended for sporting purposes. The quality of its breeding is attested by numerous prizes and championship titles, and the stud is known not only in Poland but also worldwide; its horses have been and still are part of equestrian teams of European countries, for example the Netherlands.
