History
Jarvis Estate is a family-owned winery in Napa, California. William Jarvis was born in Oklahoma and first enjoyed wine after the Navy took him to California; after attending Annapolis and serving in the Navy, he continued his studies at the University of California Berkeley, Stanford, and various French universities, and later headed his own telecommunications company in Silicon Valley. Leticia Jarvis was born in Puebla, Mexico, where she finished her college degree and met William. After their marriage, the two traveled and studied abroad, adopting France as a part-time residence and maintaining a Louis XIV Chateau in the Vesle Valley near Reims in Northern France, and they also spent summer months in Spain with their young son William. They eventually acquired a weekend estate in Napa and immersed themselves in winemaking, first studying how to best plant a vineyard, then spending a careful 10 years nurturing the vineyard and finally the winery itself, which was built underground to provide the desired cool, humid conditions. The Jarvis Estate winemaking facility is entirely contained within 45,000 square feet of cave tunneled into the scenic Vaca Mountains, four miles east of downtown Napa. Jarvis Estate was the first in this country to tunnel a cave so large that it could hold the entire winemaking operation; with the help of chief geotechnic consultant Gregg Korbin and the largest computer at University of California Berkeley, William Jarvis planned and designed the large chambers. All Jarvis wines are produced from estate vineyards located high above the city of Napa, in the mountains between Mt. George and Milliken Canyon at the southeastern end of the Napa Valley, planted in gently sloping meadows one thousand feet above the valley floor.
