Overview
Jasba is a German brand of ceramic mosaics and tiles, historically rooted in the Westerwald ceramics region. The business was founded in 1926 by Jakob Schwaderlapp in Baumbach, initially producing jugs and earthenware; the name combines the founder's name with the original production site. Decorative and vessel ceramics dominated early output, while glazed mosaic production began in the late 1950s after the founder's eldest son proposed expanding the range. In 1964 Jasba Mosaik GmbH became an independent company and acquired a 100,000 m² site at its new base in Ötzingen, while sister company Jasba Keramik continued decorative ceramics in Baumbach. Jasba Mosaik GmbH took over Jasba Keramik in 1980, after which Baumbach focused exclusively on stove tiles and tiled stoves. The company exported tiles to the United States for the first time in 1984. By 1994 revenue reached DM 93 million. At the end of 1998 Jasba commissioned what was then Germany's most modern mosaic firing line in Ötzingen, a roller kiln and dryer with a total length of 62 metres, replacing a roughly 30-year-old shuttle kiln at a cost of DM 200,000. In May 1999 Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer acquired the company retroactively to 1 January; at the time Jasba employed 520 people and had prior-year revenue of DM 68 million, rising to DM 75 million in the takeover year. Deutsche Steinzeug subsequently invested DM 14 million in modernising the Ötzingen production lines. In 2004 Deutsche Steinzeug divested the Baumbach site with its stove tile and tiled stove production. At the end of 2013 Deutsche Steinzeug transferred the Ötzingen production facility to Jasba Mosaik GmbH. At the end of 2017 Deutsche Steinzeug merged the sales organisations of Jasba and Agrob Buchtal (stylised AGROB BUCHTAL), and with effect from 1 January 2018 the Jasba Mosaik GmbH business was transferred to Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer AG. Jasba is now a brand of that company, with mosaic production concentrated in Ötzingen. Its products range from 1 x 1 cm mosaic to wall and floor tiles up to 40 x 80 cm, used in interiors such as apartments, hotels and restaurants as well as in public spaces; Jasba tiles have featured since 2012 in the new ticket hall of London's King's Cross station, and Jasba products are installed on the facade of the Brooklyn Children's Museum in New York. The brand won the iF product design award in 2009, was named a Brand of the Century in 2012, had a series named Product of the Year 2012 in the tiles category by Fliesen & Platten magazine, and in 2013 received the Rhineland-Palatinate state prize for exemplary employment of severely disabled people.
History
Jasba's history begins in 1926, when Jakob Schwaderlapp founded a company in Baumbach to produce jugs and earthenware. The name derives from the founder's name and the production location. Initially the focus was on decorative and vessel ceramics. Production of glazed mosaics began at the end of the 1950s, after the founder's eldest son suggested expanding the product range. In 1964 Jasba Mosaik GmbH became an independent company and acquired a 100,000 m² plot at its new headquarters in Ötzingen. The sister company Jasba Keramik continued to produce decorative ceramics at the traditional Baumbach site. In 1980 Jasba Mosaik GmbH took over Jasba Keramik; from then on Baumbach produced exclusively stove tiles and tiled stoves. In 1984 Jasba exported tiles to the United States for the first time. By 1994 revenue stood at DM 93 million. At the end of 1998 Jasba commissioned what was then Germany's most modern mosaic firing line in Ötzingen, a roller kiln and dryer with a total length of 62 metres; the DM 200,000 investment replaced a roughly 30-year-old shuttle kiln. In May 1999 Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer bought the company retroactively to 1 January. At the time of the takeover Jasba employed 520 people and had prior-year revenue of DM 68 million; in the takeover year revenue reached DM 75 million. Deutsche Steinzeug then invested DM 14 million in modernising the production lines in Ötzingen. In 2004 Deutsche Steinzeug divested the Baumbach site with its production of stove tiles and tiled stoves. At the end of 2013 Deutsche Steinzeug transferred the Ötzingen production facility to Jasba Mosaik GmbH. At the end of 2017 Deutsche Steinzeug merged the sales organisations of Jasba and Agrob Buchtal (stylised AGROB BUCHTAL), and with effect from 1 January 2018 a business transfer (Betriebsübergang) of Jasba Mosaik GmbH to Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer AG took place. Legally, until the end of 2017 Jasba was a GmbH and served as a sales company; its sister company was Agrob Buchtal GmbH, which offers wall and floor tiles, swimming pool ceramics and facade systems. Jasba Mosaik GmbH was a 100-percent subsidiary of Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer AG. Today Jasba is a brand of Deutsche Steinzeug Cremer & Breuer AG, with mosaic production concentrated in Ötzingen. All goods are ceramic covering materials, ranging from 1 x 1 cm mosaic to wall and floor tiles in the size 40 x 80 cm. Many of the products, organised into various series, are intended for interiors such as apartments, hotels or restaurants, but Jasba products are also used in public spaces. Jasba tiles have been installed since 2012 in the new ticket hall of London's King's Cross station, and Jasba products are built into the facade of the Brooklyn Children's Museum in New York. Jasba won the iF product design award in 2009; in 2012 it was named a Brand of the Century; the magazine Fliesen & Platten named a Jasba series Product of the Year 2012 in the tiles category; and in 2013 the company won the Rhineland-Palatinate state prize for exemplary employment of severely disabled people.
