Overview
Jebsen Group is a Hong Kong-headquartered marketing, investment, and distribution organisation with roots in the trading and shipping businesses of the late nineteenth century. It was established in Hong Kong in March 1895 by Jacob Jebsen and Heinrich Jessen, second cousins from Aabenraa. The founders initially operated in connection with a shipping agency and expanded into commercial representation, industrial products, consumer goods, automotive distribution, and other forms of cross-border trade. The group’s historical development reflects Hong Kong’s role as a gateway between European manufacturers and Chinese markets. Early activities included shipping agency work, industrial trading, and the importation of BASF dyes. In 1898, the business entered a joint venture in China involving industrial operations in Qingdao. It later broadened its commercial portfolio through beverage, automotive, infrastructure, telecommunications, and other activities. A European coordination office, Jebsen & Jessen Hamburg, was created in 1909, while the wider Jebsen & Jessen Group was formed in 1963 to consolidate activities in Southeast Asia. Jebsen is particularly associated with long-running brand representation. Its beverage business has marketed Blue Girl Beer in Hong Kong since 1906. Its motors division began importing Volkswagen vehicles in the 1950s and has represented Porsche in Hong Kong since 1955 and mainland China since 2001. The group has also developed consumer businesses covering household appliances, electronics, watches, lifestyle products, and pet care. In addition to distribution, it has operated retail concepts such as J SELECT and has participated in manufacturing and infrastructure-related ventures. The contemporary group is organised around four principal business lines: Jebsen Beverage, Jebsen Consumer, Jebsen Motors, and JCAP, the investment platform formerly known as Jebsen Capital. Jebsen Beverage covers beer, wine, spirits, and wellness beverages. Jebsen Consumer provides route-to-market and brand-building services for consumer and lifestyle products. Jebsen Motors operates automotive distribution, retail, and dealership activities, with Porsche as its best-known relationship. JCAP invests across public and private markets, asset classes, and geographic regions. Jebsen’s strategic role is to provide international companies with local market access, commercial infrastructure, distribution, marketing, retail, and brand development capabilities in Greater China. The group states that it works with more than 200 leading companies. Its business model combines long-term brand partnerships with selective investment and joint-venture activity. The group remains privately held in public descriptions, with Hans Michael Jebsen serving as chairman and Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly as chief executive officer. Its continuing operations are centred on Hong Kong, mainland China, and Macau.
History
Jebsen Group traces its origin to the establishment of Jebsen & Co. in Hong Kong in March 1895. The company was founded by Jacob Jebsen and Heinrich Jessen, second cousins from Aabenraa. Their early business was connected to shipping agency activities and the operation of commercial links along the Chinese coast. This maritime foundation gave the company an initial platform for representing foreign products and services in the regional market. The business expanded beyond shipping during its first years. In 1896, it joined the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, and in 1897 it entered industrial trading through an agency for BASF products, including indigo dyes imported into China. In 1898, Diederichsen, Jebsen & Co. was established as an early joint venture in China, with activities that included a brick factory in Qingdao. These developments established a pattern that would remain important to the group: combining agency, distribution, local market knowledge, and investment in operating businesses. Jebsen’s beverage history began with the acquisition of Blue Girl Beer in 1906. The brand subsequently became one of the group’s longest-running commercial relationships and a prominent beer name in Hong Kong. In 1909, Jebsen & Jessen Hamburg was founded to coordinate European business. During the Second World War and its aftermath, the ownership and management structure evolved. Jacob Jebsen died in Aabenraa in 1941, after which his eldest son assumed leadership responsibilities. Heinz Jessen and Michael Jebsen entered into a new partnership agreement in Shanghai in January 1944. The group expanded into automotive distribution after the war. It imported Hong Kong’s first Volkswagen Beetle in 1953 and the territory’s first Porsche in 1955. The Porsche relationship developed into a long-term dealership and distribution business covering Hong Kong and Macau, later extending to mainland China. Jebsen also attended the inaugural Canton Fair in 1957, reflecting its continuing role in facilitating international trade with China. During the 1960s and 1970s, the group broadened its corporate and infrastructure interests. The Jebsen & Jessen Group was formed in 1963 by Arwed Peter Jessen to concentrate on business in Southeast Asia. Jebsen collaborated with Siemens in 1970 on a computer-controlled public telephone system for the Lai Chi Kok Telephone Exchange. It was also involved in Modern Terminals Limited, whose container terminal at Kwai Chung officially opened in 1973. Liaison offices in Beijing were established in 1978 and 1979, strengthening the organisation’s connection with mainland China. In later decades, Jebsen developed more specialised consumer and lifestyle activities. Jebsen Fine Wines was established in Hong Kong in 1991. In 2001, the group imported Porsche vehicles into mainland China, building on its earlier Hong Kong representation. The multi-brand lifestyle retailer J SELECT launched in 2013. Jebsen Capital was introduced in 2017 as a modern multi-asset investment platform, investing across public and private markets, asset classes, and regions. The group continued to expand its industrial and consumer partnerships. In 2018, it opened a new plant in Dalian with Austrian partner TCG Unitech. In 2019, Jebsen Beverage formed a mainland China Blue Girl Beer joint venture with AB InBev. In 2024, Jebsen established a joint venture with The Vita Coco Company and became the sole mainland China distributor for Vita Coco products. In 2025, Jebsen Motors became the exclusive distributor of AITO vehicles in Macau. The investment platform was renamed JCAP in 2026. Today, Jebsen Group is organised around Beverage, Consumer, Motors, and JCAP. It operates principally in Hong Kong, mainland China, and Macau, using distribution, marketing, retail, automotive, joint-venture, and investment capabilities to help international brands build market presence in Greater China.
