History

The Jefferson Hotel opened on October 31, 1895, in downtown Richmond, Virginia. It was the dream of Lewis Ginter, born in 1824 in New York to Dutch immigrant parents, who came to Richmond in 1842 and made fortunes in the import, banking, tobacco and land development businesses. Ginter commissioned Carrere and Hastings, a renowned New York architectural firm, to design the hotel, which was built incorporating Renaissance and other architectural styles he admired. It is estimated that between $5 and $10 million went into planning, building and furnishing the hotel, with $2 million spent on construction. In 1969 the hotel was elected to the National Register of Historical Places and was considered among the finest examples of Beaux Arts style in existence. For more than 125 years The Jefferson has welcomed visitors to the Richmond Region and served the city's residents as a gathering place for social, business and charity events.
