Overview

JETTY is a commercial complex located at Nagoya Port Garden Pier in Minato-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. It sits directly in front of the Nagoya Port Aquarium and primarily serves visitors to the aquarium and the surrounding port area. The facility is divided into two main sections, NORTH and WEST, and includes a food court featuring Nagoya specialty dishes, cafes, souvenir shops, and experience-based activities such as gel candle making using glasswork. JETTY was planned as part of the 1991 Tsukiji Port Town Plan, which designated an ocean culture and recreation zone. The plan proposed by CBFrontier, a subsidiary of Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting (CBC), was adopted, and the facility was designated as a specified facility under the Temporary Measures Law for the Promotion of Development of Specified Facilities by Utilizing the Capabilities of Private Businesses in October 1992. It opened on October 29, 1992. In March 1999, CBFrontier donated the facility to the Nagoya Port Management Association, and since then it has been operated by the Nagoya Port Cultural Center Foundation (later renamed the Nagoya Minato Promotion Foundation). The facility originally consisted of four blocks: JETTY EAST, JETTY WEST, JETTY NORTH, and JETTY SOUTH. JETTY EAST, which utilized the former Garden Pier No. 6 warehouse, began demolition in 2021. JETTY WEST houses a food court on the first floor and outlet stores on the second floor. JETTY NORTH contains accessory shops with an American theme. JETTY SOUTH is an open space. In 2001, JETTY Plaza was developed on the south side of JETTY EAST. In 2012, illustrations such as a mermaid were displayed at Nagoya Port JETTY. The facility continues to operate as a dining and shopping destination for aquarium visitors and tourists.

History

JETTY was conceived as part of the 'Tsukiji Port Town Plan' formulated in October 1991, which designated an ocean culture and recreation zone in the Nagoya Port area. The facility was planned primarily to attract visitors to the Nagoya Port Aquarium. A proposal by CBFrontier, a subsidiary of Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting (CBC), was selected. In October 1992, the facility was designated as a specified facility under the Temporary Measures Law for the Promotion of Development of Specified Facilities by Utilizing the Capabilities of Private Businesses, and it opened on October 29, 1992. The complex originally consisted of four blocks: JETTY EAST, which reused the former Garden Pier No. 6 warehouse; JETTY WEST, with a food court on the first floor and outlet stores on the second floor; JETTY NORTH, featuring American-style accessory shops; and JETTY SOUTH, an open space. In March 1999, CBFrontier donated the facility to the Nagoya Port Management Association, and operation was taken over by the Nagoya Port Cultural Center Foundation (later renamed the Nagoya Minato Promotion Foundation). In 2001, JETTY Plaza was developed on the south side of JETTY EAST. In 2012, illustrations such as a mermaid were displayed at Nagoya Port JETTY. In 2021, demolition work began on JETTY EAST. As of the present, JETTY continues to operate as a dining and shopping complex, with JETTY WEST and JETTY NORTH remaining active.
